Didn't watch the eclipse today, but did once read War of the Worlds in a night, get up, leave the house onto Leith Links at the peak of a solar eclipse and totally freaked myself out at a load of people standing in public green space all facing and pointing in one direction and staring up!

Bluesky should go back to invites, continue aggressive bot bans, create a Craigslist-style marketplace (since you’re more likely to buy/get services from a educated or good person on here than any other social network), and market this place like a walled garden protected from enshittification.

It just feels very not-right to see some artists begging for money to cover basic needs and other artists announcing their nth international commission or nth 7-figure book deal, and like....there's no difference in talent. None. There are other differences, which I'm sure you can guess.

We need more bus routes that circumnavigate towns rather than going in and out of the centre. Sometimes you just want to get to the opposite side of town and it's usually two busses with a change at the central station. Annoyingly cumbersome.

Any relevant historians know if this happened after the 1919 flu pandemic? Were there articles about people with sleeping sickness just faking it for attention? Those recovering from a brush with death just trying to avoid getting a job?

If someone is wealthy, their wealth grows annually at a rate of around 7%-11%. That means any wealth tax under that doesn't reduce the wealth of the rich. It simply slows the rate of growth of their wealth. Wealth inequality is absolutely out of hand. We need to tax it. Let's start at 1%-3% annually

Finally a positive use case for AI, albeit better suited to outside chemistry. If we could use AI as an anti euphemism tool (once we've sorted out the whole destroying the planet bit) I'd be all for it. Especially as a live translator for political speeches.

Whats so odd here is that it is completely on brand for billionaires etc. to want to radically change society and, in this case, if Gates wanted everyone to be vegan that would be quite normal and he can just say it.
