“just look at that parking lot, Larry” used to talk about maps a bit but now I mostly speak legalese. rootless cosmopolitan elite (just say jewish, it’s faster), but mostly a movie nerd. from the great lakes but now in the bay. oakland forever.

What makes Scorsese, Spielberg, Nolan great is that they are some of our biggest movie directors who also make FILMS. They are in conversation with their art form and I just think it’s neat what they have to say!!

Classic heads rightfully dogpiling on the Aeneid, but I still love the moment Aeneas sees Dido in the underworld. It’s so metal in Latin and I’ll always love her as a character in classical texts.

Every time I hear someone talk about how allowing new high-density housing or reducing parking will "destroy" their neighborhood's "quality of life," I think about maps like this one

A PurpleAir air quality map showing the US Midwest and Northeast covered in dangerous PM2.5 air pollution caused by wildfires, which are exacerbated by global warming

Anyway i'm just grateful most mainstream audiences don't bother care about accuracy in plays or operas, give me all the postmodern versions of The Ring Cycle or Aeschylus' Tragedies you can

i like and respect Emily Wilson a lot, but her LRB commentary on Nolan's Odyssey is ... weird? "Unlike some of Nolan’s other films, The Odyssey is not boring" There's a lot you can criticize Nolan for, but how can you accuse him of being boring?
