A lot of fantasy authors are fantasy authors because they have a kind of nostalgia for simpler times so they see modernity and mass capitalism as kind of inherently corrupt. Tolkien also villainized industry. That doesn't make them bad people but also doesn't make their views on economics credible.

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net · yesterdayalso, cheap stuff has actually gotten way better quality now. this is a 1985 chevy cavalier. 88hp engine (although it was fuel injected!), and basically no creature comforts [a/c was an option, same with an FM radio]. it would last you maybe 100k miles. It cost the equivalent of $27,000 today.
The thing you described is basically saying that "colonialism is the Great Replacement for realsies", which is problematic because the whole critique of Great Replacement Theory is not "you'd be right if it happened but it's not happening", but "immigrants don't owe you conformity."
I don't know if Hasan Piker believes it but some DSA types seem to think the Democratic primary electorate is more right wing than the general election electorate.

Colonialism requires a mother country whose military force creates a colony on foreign soil. Colonialism does not consist of immigrants wanting to build their own society, or integrate with their con-ethnics locally, rather than assimilate as second-class subjects to their "hosts".
If you want to not think of Israelis as abstractions, you stop calling Israel and Israelis colonial, simply because they're not unless you start from the abstractions as axiomatic rather than the real people and events.
People complain about college costs. I looked at the cost of college and a Honda Accord (that you bought upon graduation) when I went to school 92-97 and now. The Accord was top of the line model in 1997 but base model now and the current model was still better. Total cost was LESS today.
Yeah, hard to think of any durable goods that have not gotten a lot better (I have the sense this is true of dishwashers and such too). It's the cheaper consumer goods that in some cases have gotten "worse" though that term ignores price.
My grandmother gave my brother (and then me when he went to college) an 82 or 83 Cavvy, and it was the worst car I've ever been in, despite having really low milage (for a 2 decade old car, my grandpa did basically all of the driving). It literally burned down.
I owned a 1976 Mercury Capri. The teeth on the timing gear were made of nylon. You have no idea how much my teenage pocketbook wishes I were kidding.
You can get a brand-new Chevy Trax, probably the closest analog to the Cavalier from Chevy, with a good handful of upgrades for that $27,000 now. Even the truly base models blow any 1980s commuter car out of the water for 20% less!
I had a coworker last year say I bought a new Toyota Corolla in 1982 for $ x (he remembered the exact price). I ran it through the inflation calculator and it came out to more than a 2025 Corolla.
