I grew up in a brick house. Barely discernable here, but it was one of many on our block. You don't see brick houses any more. 😒 Apparently bricks take more work to make than aluminum siding.

Hosea 9- Because every thing God's people did under God was an act of holiness, now that they've gone to Baal, every act of work, every bite of food, every action they take is a sacrilege. Day by day, they move farther from God. This feels very true to me. 🕯

The teenaged daughter of a somewhat new parishioner was the cross bearer yesterday, and it made me weep. Why let some kid do this? What does she believe? Look how shes dressed! Then the tears! 🕯I saw everything.

omne solum forti patria est, ut piscibus aequor,      ut volucri vacuo quicquid in orbe patet. “To the brave every land is the homeland, as to fishes the sea, as to birds the whole open space of the empty world.” (Ovid, Fasti I.494, trans. Wiseman)

For those who dismiss the feeding of the 5,000, Tracy Chapman would like a word: 🎵 My God is good in the kitchen Make a good meal from bread and fishin' Feed the hungry, pour the wine, Everybody welcome to have a good time. Sit at his table, Enjoy the food. 🎵

Remembered how a fellow parishioner once laughed at me for believing that the feeding of the 5,000 actually happened. Tears in my eyes at the gospel reading today. I'm a biblical literalist. 🕯😮‍💨

My weekly meditation is up. I love that the gospels tell us again and again that Jesus looked upon the crowds and felt compassion for them. That detail about Him has informed and defined so much of my approach to ministry. It is in this weeks gospel reading, and it made it into the title as well.

Every year I continue to learn new ways of seeing His compassion at work in myself & in our world. Every year His compassion becomes more miraculous. There are even moments where I am invited to be a conduit for the compassion of Christ. A Lectionary Meditation for our 18th Week of Ordinary Time 👇
