New platform, new handle but always just looking and finding

Outside of the races for Congress, progressives had a very good night in Michigan. They won multiple open legislative seats against establishment-backed opponents in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Detroit. The DSA also flipped a seat in Detroit!

I hope the El-Sayed scare light a fire under national progressives’ asses to lock the fuck in for Flanagan, Hong, and Markey Congress is about to go on recess, Bernie/AOC/Warren better be camping out in Minnesota Wisconsin and Massachusetts for the next month

Basically everything about my politics can be explained by becoming politically active in 2016 bc of immigration and gun control (which explains what I felt about Sanders then lol) & my mom raising me in homeless advocacy made me a “housing is the theory of everything esp for climate”

One of my most paradoxical takes is I will always be a Sunrise Movement defender bc I’m fucking tired of ppl ignoring how bad liberal climate politics were pre-Sunrise Robinson Meyer wrote how unprepared Dems were in 2017- Sunrise changed that! www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

One of my least favorite things on social media is when ppl -in an effort to prove intellectual superiority- act in supreme bad faith and unwittingly reveal their own ignorance in their arrogance “Air travel has gotten worse” “So you just want luxury air travel again”- BFFR

I feel like ppl aren’t distinguishing btwn air travel being for the elites *50 years ago* and air travel notoriously getting worse over the *past 25 years* due to increased regulation that killed competition & incentivizes airline to not care about satisfaction at all prospect.org/2017/11/03/u...

Unfriendly Skies - The American Prospect

It’s time to admit that airline deregulation has failed passengers, workers—and economic efficiency.

So this is basically one of the entry points to becoming a reactionary

Tbh the issue a lot of ppl are having with Emily Wilson’s critiques of the Odyssey is that films aren’t often seen as literature and ppl are disjointed by her performing a literary analysis that is absent from most film criticism Imo it’s welcome bc I never understood why film isn’t seen as lit

BeijingPalmer@beijingpalmer.bsky.social · 21h ago

the thing is that Wilson seems to not be particularly well-versed in film criticism, which when criticizing a film of the Odyssey is more important than knowledge of the Odyssey.

Francesca Hong sounded great on her Pod Save America interview backing tax cuts, extending healthcare and education through a millionaire tax….when she wasnt responding to questions about her old tweets

A lot of complaints about Dems are exaggerated/hyperbolic but on gerrymandering, they really are disaster. It's one of the areas where you can legit question whether this is a party that even cares about winning. Imagine thinking we're getting court packing when they can't even do THIS stuff.

Politico says New Jersey Dems appear disinclined to put a redistricting measure on the ballot in 2027 after missing the 2026 deadline. A new 11-1 map could target two GOP House seats and protect Dem seats, but some Dems seem uninterested because they’re likely to flip one of the two in 2026 anyway

And tbh this is becoming less and less true as advancements in sports medicine and training has become widely available to men and women (eg Simone Biles, tennis-top female players hit as hard if not harder than the top men, even shooting in basketball)

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social · 23h ago

I also don't totally understand what it's trying to prove. Like ok maybe the best men in the world are better than the best women due to inherent physiological advantages. So what? Do you go to a track meet and go "why is anyone watching this? a horse could easily outrun all these guys"

i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social · 2d ago

the best HS teams in the country have multiple guys who will be in the NBA in a couple of years. they aren't normal high schools, they're basketball factories. but this literally doesn't matter. the value of women's sports isn't contingent on their performance vis a vis men.

Don't just drive past the premise, though, which is absurd. Any WNBA team is exclusively the top 0.01% athletes in the sport. Pretending that a high school team could hang with, much less beat, them is ridiculous.
