The whiplash of hearing talks about Hormuz being reopened under Iranian control vs the Houthis actively instituting a blockade w/ Iran support on Saudi tankers in Bab el-Mandeb Strait….what are we doing here
UKMTO WARNING 106-26
Outside of the races for Congress, progressives had a very good night in Michigan. They won multiple open legislative seats against establishment-backed opponents in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Detroit. The DSA also flipped a seat in Detroit!
One day, after seeing this every cycle we will finally internalize this….maybe once Trump kicks it so we all don’t react out of existential fear and dread but probably not today lmao
my strong prior about michigan btw is that the vast majority of primary voters were actually happy to vote for either candidate in the general and will consolidate quite easily behind el-sayed just like they are coalescing behind talarico in texas online freakouts are not real life
Don’t love the excuse “it’s hard to poll Michigan primaries bc they’re open” bc so are Georgia and we have always done fine
It’s underrated how after losing Rogers retired to Florida which is why when being taken to account on anything, he doesn’t have a response
El-Sayed: "If all Mike Rogers got is that 'his name is Abdul, and my name is Mike,' you're gonna be surprised how many people are like, 'Yeah, but that's the Abdul who wants to bring down the price of my groceries and make sure I got healthcare. So yeah, I like Abdul over your Mike from Florida.'"
I hope Peggy Flanagan tries to make whatever more limited ad buys she can and highlight Craig hounding Hoffman a shooting victim for an endorsement (tho I’m more optimistic MN being college-educated helps her)
I hope the El-Sayed scare light a fire under national progressives’ asses to lock the fuck in for Flanagan, Hong, and Markey Congress is about to go on recess, Bernie/AOC/Warren better be camping out in Minnesota Wisconsin and Massachusetts for the next month

Basically everything about my politics can be explained by becoming politically active in 2016 bc of immigration and gun control (which explains what I felt about Sanders then lol) & my mom raising me in homeless advocacy made me a “housing is the theory of everything esp for climate”
One of my most paradoxical takes is I will always be a Sunrise Movement defender bc I’m fucking tired of ppl ignoring how bad liberal climate politics were pre-Sunrise Robinson Meyer wrote how unprepared Dems were in 2017- Sunrise changed that! www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Democrats Are Shockingly Unprepared to Fight Climate Change
There’s no magic bill waiting in the wings—and no quick path to arriving at one.

These three candidates in Michigan came for the establishment. They all just won. A movement is building.
Michigan just proved something the political establishment doesn’t want to admit: When we organize, we WIN! Now, let’s make it happen again on Tuesday, August 11. Join @indivisible.org’s phonebank for @peggyflanagan.bsky.social on Monday and help us keep up the momentum.
One of my least favorite things on social media is when ppl -in an effort to prove intellectual superiority- act in supreme bad faith and unwittingly reveal their own ignorance in their arrogance “Air travel has gotten worse” “So you just want luxury air travel again”- BFFR
I feel like ppl aren’t distinguishing btwn air travel being for the elites *50 years ago* and air travel notoriously getting worse over the *past 25 years* due to increased regulation that killed competition & incentivizes airline to not care about satisfaction at all prospect.org/2017/11/03/u...

It’s time to admit that airline deregulation has failed passengers, workers—and economic efficiency.

So this is basically one of the entry points to becoming a reactionary
This feels like an American source bc the Iranians have publicly rejected this????
Strait of Hormuz deal does not foresee transit fees for ships, sources say. The Iranian-Omani proposal – that is currently under negotiation – to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would have no tolls or service fees for ships transiting the waterway, sources said.-CBS News
We are still engaging in an oil blockade of Cuba that is causing a massive humanitarian crisis and scores of deaths btw www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/cuba...

A professor of Latin American public health details how the 2026 fuel blockade has affected every domain of Cuba's health system

Trump administration has increased intelligence operations in Cuba as part of a broader effort to pressure the communist government into major reforms or a change in power.
Was baffled I got blocked until I realized OP was Catholic lol (in my defense they were talking about Total Depravity so I thought they weren’t lol)
Tbh the issue a lot of ppl are having with Emily Wilson’s critiques of the Odyssey is that films aren’t often seen as literature and ppl are disjointed by her performing a literary analysis that is absent from most film criticism Imo it’s welcome bc I never understood why film isn’t seen as lit
the thing is that Wilson seems to not be particularly well-versed in film criticism, which when criticizing a film of the Odyssey is more important than knowledge of the Odyssey.
We were the minority in the 2019/20 and….tbh there’s no sense vindication in being right. I hate Ed but I pray he wins next month
*whispers* Kennedy should've won in 2020
Tbh imo, underrated how good Hong is when she isn’t asked to defend old tweets- so clear, direct, and knowledgeable on state policy Obviously telegenic too
Francesca Hong sounded great on her Pod Save America interview backing tax cuts, extending healthcare and education through a millionaire tax….when she wasnt responding to questions about her old tweets

A lot of complaints about Dems are exaggerated/hyperbolic but on gerrymandering, they really are disaster. It's one of the areas where you can legit question whether this is a party that even cares about winning. Imagine thinking we're getting court packing when they can't even do THIS stuff.
Politico says New Jersey Dems appear disinclined to put a redistricting measure on the ballot in 2027 after missing the 2026 deadline. A new 11-1 map could target two GOP House seats and protect Dem seats, but some Dems seem uninterested because they’re likely to flip one of the two in 2026 anyway
Every day Martin Luther is justified There is nothing you can do to deserve mercy and grace- the Protestant Reformation, forever vindicated

Michigan out soon, but have realized I have to choose between Michigan being good and Washington getting done, so, in light of the fact that easily half the Washington races I'm interested in are going to be rerun in November anyway, I'm cutting WA down to just the congressionals, sorry
And tbh this is becoming less and less true as advancements in sports medicine and training has become widely available to men and women (eg Simone Biles, tennis-top female players hit as hard if not harder than the top men, even shooting in basketball)
I also don't totally understand what it's trying to prove. Like ok maybe the best men in the world are better than the best women due to inherent physiological advantages. So what? Do you go to a track meet and go "why is anyone watching this? a horse could easily outrun all these guys"
i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.
the best HS teams in the country have multiple guys who will be in the NBA in a couple of years. they aren't normal high schools, they're basketball factories. but this literally doesn't matter. the value of women's sports isn't contingent on their performance vis a vis men.

Don't just drive past the premise, though, which is absurd. Any WNBA team is exclusively the top 0.01% athletes in the sport. Pretending that a high school team could hang with, much less beat, them is ridiculous.
“Fund the police” was very cute, very clever, until your popularity with Black male voters dropped and the police unions endorsed the guy who launched January 6 anyway
