I did manage to make a short visit to the museum between archive sessions and was very impressed by the new Paul Sarrut and the Indian Army exhibition. I noted with some amusement that Lord Ashcroft doesn't appear to mind 'woke' history as long as he can show off his shiny medal collection 🤨

Preparing for PhD upgrades this week and the one piece of advice I frequently give is this: Don't assume the reader finds your project interesting - show me what's at stake and why a non-specialist should care. Make the significance of your intervention explicit (though avoid straw men).

Jo Wolff@jowolff.bsky.social · 3w agoIncreasingly coming to the view that the Harvard referencing system is the death of stylish academic writing. Flow as a reader is impossible when the text is littered with regular occurrences of (Boggins and Zuglinsky 2022).
Lull in renovations here and distractions, and I’m revisiting Cara-Friend letters from the 1980s. An incredible collection written to the LGBT+ helpline and befriending service in Belfast. Often - but not always - understandably miserable, they preserve coming out moments of personal revelation.
