Stephen Pyne, author of UNDYING FIRE, asks, "Why is it that countries that we think of as modernized—those that have money, science, technology—are the ones that are being clobbered?" The answer isn't just climate—it's also how we've changed the land itself. Read more in The New Yorker:

I recently wrote a couple of articles on the history of forest fires and fire prevention in MN, one an overview and one more in-depth. #envhist #MinnesotaHistory #Wildfire @mprnews.org @minnpost.bsky.social Links to the articles: niche-canada.org/2026/06/13/t... www.mnhs.org/mnopedia/sea...
There was a new fire detected over the weekend — the lightning-caused Finstad Fire, burning near Finstad Lake near Buyck. It was last reported to be just a tenth of an acre; crews were dropping water on the fire to try to keep it from spreading.
This is banana republic stuff - we all know that, right?
FLAG: Trump gets to keep tax immunity for himself, his sons, and the Trump Organization under the new 'deal' struck by Todd Blanche. The new order also reaffirms that Trump won't have to pay any taxes he might have owed the IRS.
NEW: Big new feature from me about offshore wind farms as anchors for wildlife! For example: seals swimming *into* turbine towers to, apparently, hunt fish - and scour protection at the base of turbines used by sea creatures as a dwelling place. atmos.earth/science-and-...

I've got a lot of sources about live in the rural Alps (1250-1600) that I want to make publicly accessible. But before I do so, I'd like to try & make it more difficult for AI-scrapers to gobble them up. Anyone have any ideas or tips? #skystorians #medievalsky #envhist #animalhistory #earlymodern
Too hot to think or write, so I worked on publishing the dataset of my research instead. Turns out it's pretty chunky! 1'000+ pages of sources about life in the Alps from the 13th to the 17th cent. Hope it'll help others, so that they don't have go through as many editions & archives as I did

It would be easy to call this the “new normal“ but that’s incorrect. In actual fact, “normal” is going to keep getting worse and worse and worse. Just how bad it will get depends entirely on how fast & far we go on real, legitimate (not performative) #ClimateAction. We know how. It’s about will.
Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
