Hoping to stave off discussions of its energy use, big tech is hyping AI as a climate solution. Instead, AI is a climate problem. And like so many other “solutions” peddled by industry, misstatements, cherry picked data and slick PR are behind the claims, not actual data.

Authoritarianism 101: the sloppiness is a feature, not a bug. It directs money to regime cronies (Palantir), discretion to paramilitaries, and fear to citizens. A system designed for legitimate law enforcement or border control would not fulfill these goals as well.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
