It's been reported that Grace Chang, Hong Kong's preeminent Mandarin screen diva of the 50s, passed away this afternoon, one day shy of her 93rd birthday. Watch Mambo Girl and The Wild, Wild Rose to see her at the height of her powers.
I was today years old when I learned that Francesca da Rimini was a real person from Ravenna. I love the ironic, ill-omened tritone on the words "datemi pace."

This is predictably superb, but the surprise is that Grümmer doesn't trill.

Les Rencontres d’Arles se penchent sur la manière dont le Ghana s’est appuyé sur les images, dans les années 1960, pour accompagner sa marche vers la modernité. A découvrir également dans le cadre de ...

One day, we will need a biography of Anthony Fauci. I am old enough to remember his role in the AIDS crisis and his tense relationship with ACT UP. Then, many years later, came Covid and the orange horror, and now he is being reincarnated as a figure of the resistance. What a life.

The oddest thing about the response to this essay is people who say it’s “personal”. You can disagree about some or all of it! I may well be wrong! But it’s not “personal” to analyze a film or other work of art, even negatively. Criticism is more than “Hurray!” or “Hiss!”
Lisette Oropesa is doing Norma, and I am in two minds about it. She has the musicality, the dramatic temperament, and the stage presence, but the voice? In a smaller house, with a smaller orchestra, maybe, but there have been warning signs. It seems to me that there are two reasonable approaches...
I enjoyed Emily Wilson's translation of both Homeric epics, and I haven't seen the film (yet), but I am surprised that so many people on here appear never to have read a proper review before.
If there are no rules to stop her from doing this, it means that there are none to prevent me from responding with my best Priscilla, Queen of the Desert impersonation. I'm sure she would like that.
Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...

My parents' former holiday home in Biscarrosse is on the west side of town and the burnt houses are all on the east side, so I don't have to picture it as a charred ruin, which is something. It is a small place and I had to check the map to make sure.
The Sleepy Head Day celebrations continue. Although I'm sure the extraordinary music would have startled me awake.

Friendly reminder that these things aren't impacted by closing the Strait of Hormuz so maybe, just maybe, we should implement them to avoid being impacted by future conflicts: -Solar panels -Wind turbines -Battery storage -Electric vehicles -Bicycles -Natural fertilizers -Electric heat pumps
There is no alt text in the original post, but this is actually the lovely opera house in Bordeaux (which I have been forever wanting to visit).
As long as the "response" doesn't involve phasing out fossil fuels, I don't see any grounds for optimism. (I'm not exactly holding my breath.)
Happy Sleepy Head Day to all who celebrate.

This is truly a Nabucco for the history books. Souliotis is in very good voice, the best Abigaille after Callas. Guelfi and Ghiaurov are likewise excellent. I see that Cecchele's son got into an argument with the poster in the comments, despite this being the only Verdi opera without a tenor aria.
