Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

I've often thought of the segregation effect of GATE programs as a feature (at least from white parents' perspective), and the answer seems to be to open up the programs, welcome more students, and avoid separating them from their peers.
