The first afternoon session at the Bridges #MathArt conference has David Swart speak about "Spaces Filling Curves" (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2026/bridges...). He employs an optimization algorithm to weave a strip of paper around a sphere, resulting in fascinating #MathArt patterns. (1/3)

We started off with two great plenary talks at Bridges: George Hart on AI and math art, and @ayliean.bsky.social on time. I especially loved her musing about the act of making art being the point—illustrated by her many varied ways of drawing an identical grid of squares.
Warsh has enlisted the "very best minds" to remake the Fed. Missing from every task force: anyone representing regular people or labor. But the Fed doesn't need a new task force to hear from the public—it already listens. My latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
The Fed Needs to Start Listening to Normal People

Can't repost with comments for the thread by @chrischirp.bsky.social I just reposted, on school closures during Covid, but I'd say this: I think Christina's comments are spot on. School closures were one of the worst aspects of lockdown, and hard to discuss in a balanced way now. /1
I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.
I've recently been working on the Talking Maths in Public podcast, for our maths communication network - each episode has interviews with maths communicators about projects they've worked on and their approach, and it's full of fascinating chat. Check out the latest episode at

As you look toward fall class, do two things for space and grace; . First, add two flex days to you syllabus. You can move the into place when you're sick when everyone needs a metal health day, when a concept needs a little more time. it takes pressure off when the unexpected happens (more)
We are seeing a large increase in ICE activity across NYC. We need more people trained and connected to local groups so we can respond as quickly as possible to keep our neighbors safe. We just set up two virtual trainings for August 2nd and 4th, 6-7:30pm. RSVP here: www.mobilize.us/handsoffnyc/...
Anthropic has launched a new fund for ambitious economics research projects studying AI-related transitions in the labor market, etc. My hot take: few people have thought more about how to put those on the margins of the labor market on a better path than crime economists.
More footage of the burning Wildberries in Novosemeikino, Samara region, Russia.
A Wildberries distribution hub in Novosemeikino, Samara region got hit today. The facility is 178,600 square meters and one of the company's biggest in the Volga region. A Russian flag with "zov" was painted right next to it.
Hi @womeninlogic.bsky.social, here is a thread of some of the presentations by women at Computability in Europe 2026! There were 3 other co-located conferences, so this is not a complete listing. #wil #womeninlogic
biiiiig referendum the GOP has put on the ballot that could kill direct democracy in Missouri on Tuesday. this Tuesday
Under a proposed rule for citizen measures in Missouri, all five popular initiatives that voters in the state have approved since 2020 would have failed, a Bolts analysis found. On Tuesday, Missourians will vote on the measure:
Not going to be at Bridges this year but I did get a chance to visit Ireland (including Galway) earlier this summer. I hope everyone has fun at Bridges. And that the people going to MAA Math Fest in Boston stop by to say hi in the exhibit hall.
New rule: if the indictment gets a press conference, the dismissal gets one too
this Pirro press conference is completely beyond parody, like a deleted scene from Idiocracy. listen to this shit

Nice collection of bad graphs! (Some of the pie charts don’t quite seem fair, since they’re just apparently assigning numbers to random-sized slices…but I guess there’s a lot of innumerate pie charts makers out there)

Overnight, a masked bandit broke into our kitchen. Armed with opposable thumbs, he proceeded to sample everything on offer. I’d just visited the farmers market, so the menu was extensive. I can now share a highly specific peer-reviewed list of what this particular raider did & did not enjoy. 🧵

what a must-read piece. also, shout out to @gulfstatesnewsroom.bsky.social @typeinvestigations.org and @floodlightnews.org, credited by the NYT for the work they did on this topic well before this published
A lot of what-the-hell moments in this story, but building a data center in a floodplain in Louisiana is inviting the wrath of Poseidon.
