One of the reasons most apocalyptic robot uprising scenarios are not particularly threatening is that not only are humanoid robots actually terrible for design and longevity, but most other complicated robot weapons are too!

I'll admit that the part of the Odyssey which made me chuckle was the one line where Odysseus said Zeus's law was "treat others as you wish to be treated" because oh boy does the Zues from myth definitely not seem to think anything like that! The Golden Rule as well understand it was not Zues's!

Its embarrassing how many grown ass adults live in these fantasies where people work for some nonsense like the artificial cultures oligarchs manufacture over survival.

I do wonder what OpEd writers are gonna do in 2027 when the last millenials age out of their 20s and into their 30s and will require someone else to blame for the world's problems?

Finally saw The Odyssey. It was pretty good, but the costuming was just goofy at times. Some good sequences however. The Circe scene is definitely one of the most well shot and crafted pieces of horror put to film!

Pistols helped change the dangers of mounted warfare by giving some handheld firepower to soldiers. The cut and slash of swords now dealt with the flash and bang of firearms! I've had fun writing some of those scenes!

Whenever I see people dooming over AI/LLMs I find it so tiresome. It's not inevitable it will take over our lives. The technology has real limitations and a thousand tiny issues. Skynet isn't just around the corner and artists aren't doomed. I'll just be here creating and having fun thanks 🤷‍♂️

If youre inclined to give any credence to Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War or Biological War books, be aware "Roswell 1947 was Stalin sending Mengele-mutants to scare America" is literally something she claims in her earlier Area 51 book

Schools on the Frontier, such as they are, generally teach reading, writing and math. Apprenticeships teach you everything you need to know about a given career. Hence the girls in Aletown's Dormitory at the Brewery learning there!

Finished Season 5 of Outlander. I'm told it's much different from the books but is a much better story for it. One particular character and the use of the historical Regulators movement sold the show well with more emotional payoff!

I have yet to run across a situation in which someone has said "I fed this through AI and-" where the subsequent interaction has turned out well.

Just finished reading YESTERYEAR by Caro Claire Burke, and I have no idea why it's billed as satire. It has some compelling moments, but it also has some deeply uncomfortable moments that are bafflingly played straight.

Most LLMs can churn out very competently written articles that are up there with the best and blandest from the 2000s. Indeed I suspect quite a lot of short conent on the web are LLM written. However the most competent LLM fiction I've read is still on par with the worst human authors.

I mean, it's not news that LLMs write as well as people, since they've been doing that for a while - most people, as it turns out, don't write particularly well. I think there are practical and legal issues that will still privilege human-generated work, independent of quality, for a while yet.

One of my personal tragedies from this very wet Ontario summer is that yesterday I was reading a book on the shore after going for a kayak. Today I'm making sure my windows are closed when the rain picks up so my kitchen doesn't get soaked!

A truly shocking number of people are incapable of owning anything resembling a weapon. It does, in fact, require a lot of personal responsibility that many people cannot adopt for themselves. Despite not being anti-gun myself, I truly appreciate that 🇨🇦 has very strict gun laws for this reason!

On the Frontier schooling is done on an ad hoc basis. Some baronies have schools while others do not. Aletown is no exception. There's no formal schooling but they do have apprenticeships for trades such as they are!
