The pledge not to raise general taxation is basically this government’s original sin and a synecdoche of everything that’s wrong with it - timid, and forced into a series of unpalatable, harmful and unpleasant manoeuvres that please literally nobody because of its timidity.

Make no mistake, Russian soldiers have committed atrocities in Ukraine — things we haven’t seen since WWII. Over 25,000 people, including women and children, were slaughtered in Mariupol alone, and Russia continues to bomb cities, schools and hospitals. Sickening.

We’ve got our own HE funding crisis in the UK but this is an order apart - even if some great scientists move to Europe it’s a real threat to scientific/economic progress generally. American retreat in every sphere, from global networks only now realising how reliant they are on US participation
