Here’s my Spider-Man: Brand New Day review. The film is a bit overcrowded at times (why did we need The Hand in this?) but it’s about the same core dilemma at the heart of every great Spider-Man story: His internal struggle over his double life.

Related to everything Matt writes here, Spider-Man 2 is remarkable because it makes Peter and Mary Jane's relationship the main story, while Spidey's conflict with Doc Ock is a secondary concern. There's not another comic-book movie that centers a recognizable human relationship this strongly.

It literally and figuratively beats the shit out of him. Which is why Sam Raimi was the perfect director for Spider-Man. Nobody loves to beat the shit out of their movie’s heroes like he does.

He’s denied snacks at a party, pushed on the street, loses his job, harassed by his landlord. It’s brutal! Then, when he’s pulled into that subway car, his first time getting shown real kindness, I sobbed. So good.

What an incredible run that a person could make such a massive list (which is great) and still have so many more you could choose from. Spidey is the best.

Then Disney bought Lucasfilm, wanted to make new Star Wars, and shelved Detours forever. Over a decade later, it will finally be seen.
This is incredibly happy news. I had the privilege of writing an episode for the unproduced third season of DETOURS, and it was going to be a spectacularly funny and beautifully animated series.
