June 1, 1926: Andy Griffith, a TV actor beloved for his reassuringly folksy and gentle characters, is born in Mount Airy, N.C., the town that inspired the fictional Mayberry. He played the sheriff on the top-rated “The Andy Griffith Show” of the 1960s and starred as “Matlock” in the ’80s and ’90s.

Daily Hanna Barbera The voice of teen idol Jet Screamer (1962) was Howie Morris, who would soon play Ernest T Bass, troublesome mountain man, in the Andy Griffith Show. Morris was a fabulous comedian, and also a director and voice actor. Jet Screamer was his first Hanna Barbera work.

Right out of college I was at an art gallery opening and there was this painting of Don Knotts all in green on a wood panel. I didn't buy it because I was right out of college, but it's the only thing I didn't buy that I think about regularly.

…and just like that, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW is no longer on any paid or free streaming services as of 2026, as far as I can tell. Worse, Disney only sells the first three seasons on digital. It remains available on linear TV and DVD. But: it’s no way to treat one of the classics.

Fun fact: Andy Griffith appeared as Ben Matlock on all 3 major networks. Seasons 1-6 ran on NBC. Seasons 7-9 ran on ABC. Matlock's final TV appearance is a two-part episode in season 4 of Diagnosis: Murder, which aired on CBS.
