i think part of our issue with "people treating works of fiction as looks into other worlds is contributing to media illiteracy and objectively bad" is that some of the most thought-provoking works of fiction for us literally ask you to engage with them as a peek into another world (and in the case of video games, how your presence can affect another world). it feels dismissive of metanarrative elements to such an extreme degree that it just leaves a bad taste in our mouth. and even if a work of art is written as a peek into another world and it contains uncomfortable material, that still doesn't show that the author endorses it. often times, the point of a work of fiction is to make you feel things and i think eliminating or dismissing the element of suspension of disbelief as a literary tactic or device is frankly one of the most internet discourse poisoned opinions we've seen
