Robin Wagner-Pacifici was a mentor and a friend. She taught me so much, not only about how to think about the world , and how to write about it, but also what it means to be a great teacher and colleague. Robin was a star and the world is darker without her. I’ll miss you, Robin.

According to an increasingly dominant contingent of sociologists, sociologists also need to engage with the public more forcefully. "As bodies, we need to speak to the public when we need to interrupt public harm or advocate for the public good," says Saida Grundy, a professor of sociology and African American and Black Diasporic Studies at Boston University. She compares the ASA to the American Heart Association, which uses its research and authority to advance messages intended to improve public health, providing guidelines and issuing warnings. Shouldn't the ASA and its individual members similarly deploy their research to inveigh against injustice and advance social change? In her view, sociology has an obligation to engage with the world. If students are simply uninterested in the core bargain of a class like this, it’s hard to know what to do. You teach the material because you think it’s important they know it; they don’t give a shit, but want the credential; and the university wants their money. Your main option is “pretend”.

AI has started blocking the Wayback Machine from chronicling the web. Considering that nearly 40% of websites disappear after 10 years, this will enforce a giant loss in collective memory.

Handful of detainments here by the reflecting pool. They are being done a variety of officers, including Monroe County Sheriff, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State Police, US Marshals, a county in Texas I can’t make out, and a county in New York I can’t make out.
