It’s really something to see all the congratulatory comments in El-Sayed ‘s replies from folks outside the US, the people from the whole rest of the world who are desperately hoping we can get our shit together. I gently urge the people upset about his win to think about that

The media's takeaway from an El-Sayed win is the same as it would have been from a Stevens win, and the same as it will be if El-Sayed wins the general, or if he loses it: everyone, no matter who they are, needs to take several steps to the right.
In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

the Mountain Goats@themountaingoats.bsky.social · 3d agoI agree strongly with this -- in that difficult moment, the possibility of collective effort was conceivable. Not everybody felt it, but many did. I think the political class did not like this one bit.
I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
The RFK Jr.-style response to COVID is childish in the worst way. Bad thing happened out of anyone’s control. They don’t want to understand it, they want someone to yell at. The idea that dealing with it would require any sacrifice upsets them. It’s all mom’s fault, throw a fit and she’ll be sorry.
I'm a non-Muslim non-Arab who will sometimes say "Inshallah" because I regularly interact with Muslim people online and find the way they use "Inshallah" very charming and also because I recognize that it's literally just another way of saying "God willing"

It’s not a slogan. It’s a cause. Abolishing slavery was a cause, and everything that’s written below about prison abolition was written about abolition of slavery. It’s good to have causes, if they are just.

The right clearly always wanted to make abortion illegal and punish women who got them. But they didn't make that their slogan! They knew better!
I am of the opinion that raccoons are in the process of domesticating themselves. They’re smart enough to want in on what pets have. They’re not like, scientifically as far as cats and dogs but they’re pretending to be, I’ve seen influencers with their raccoons their little faces give them away
Bigotry is like body autonomy. You can't have "just a little body autonomy" or "only some people have human rights". You either have them or you don't. Compromising on them means you are comfortable with some being treated as less than human and that is wrong.
If you are arguing that throwing trans people under the bus will win Dems elections you are 1. an op 2. horribly shitty because you should care about trans rights full stop but also 3. they IMMEDIATELY went after women having sports at all. It's like bigotry is bad? Huh.
