I learned this from growing up in Los Angeles around older folks who were around when it happened & still talked about it. But it’s also a subplot in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and people are shocked when I tell them that part of the movie is a true story.

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

whenever someone tells you that it's simply impossible for police to be charged with misconduct or criminal charges, you can tell they're wrong because some cops do get charged regularly — when they are whistleblowers or reformers prosecutors are actually extremely eager to help drum them out!
