At our local Middle School to talk to Republican neighbors about the hyperscaler proposed for our district. This spot is a polling place in a very blue area for a Republican 3-way primary, my expectations are low. But I am ready!

100 years of July sea surface temperature anomalies... you'll see important patterns of regional climate variability as the animation evolves, but ultimately, the story behind the long-term trend toward record warmth is driven by human-caused climate change. Data from @noaa.gov ERSSTv6. 🌊

Happy to get updated on the state of knowledge on the air-sea gas exchange contribution of injected bubbles! I was unable to stay in the field (or lab) after '99, but it was the topic of my PhD thesis (A Gas Tension Method for Air-Water Gas Exchange Studies, 1993). Lots of bubble size count labor!
Bubbles enhance air-sea gas exchange, but quantifying their contribution is complex due to nonlinear wind speed dependence, solubility effects, and oversaturation. Read about it all in our latest review. 🌊🧪
Today is heat-mapping day in Fairfax County. Put this weather station on our car & off we went at 6am, 2pm, and again 6pm on a route through a neighborhood in a region experiencing one of the hottest days of the last 10 years. Not everyone will feel it the same & we're happy to help get that data!
☀️ Virginia is feeling the heat this week! As temperatures climb across the Commonwealth, data-driven solutions can help protect our most vulnerable neighbors, improve public health, and build communities that are better prepared for a warming future. 🌳🌎 #UrbanHeat #HeatMapping
The Earth will remember. "In other words, today's emissions are already beginning to write a geological chapter that future civilizations, if they exist, could eventually read."
Ocean acidification emerging as a planetary signal linking today's carbon emissions to Earth's deep-time memory
When most people hear the phrase "ocean acidification," they think of coral reefs, shellfish or declining fisheries. Those concerns are real. But while working on our recent research, I found myself a...

🚨 HEADS UP: If you haven't submitted a comment on the OMB proposal yet, there's still time - but it's running out! TODAY IS THE LAST DAY to push back against Russell Vought's attempt to give political appointees unprecedented control over federal research funding. Take Action: zurl.co/cY8HD
While land inhabitants are feeling the heat, scientists would also like you to be aware of the ocean heat extremes being documented now, with impacts to follow. It is 🚨.
A massive marine heat wave in the Pacific, spanning an area 8x the contiguous US, is expected to intensify storms, exacerbate heat waves on land, and raise sea levels, particularly along the California coast. Climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of marine heat waves.
RGGI rewards clean and efficient energy generation. Dominion Energy would rather obscure that fact and carry on with their profitable and familiar build out and running of fossil-gas plants. Transparency on fuel costs, including on bills, and risk-sharing with customers are solutions proposed.
Profit‑driven utilities and the explosive energy demands of data centers — not Virginia’s reentry into RGGI — are the real forces driving electric bills higher, as Dominion shifts soaring fuel
On July first, Virginia will return to RGGI 💚. Benfornado @selc.bsky.social says consumers may still pay more for power – but they should blame data centers and continued reliance on fossil fuels.
Virginia to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative
Over the last two years, electric bills in Virginia have risen 24% on average. Consumer advocates blame rising prices for natural gas and other fossil fuels along with growing demand from data centers...

Great to see @motherjones.com pick up the heat pump group buy chatter! I always love it when the conversation breaks out of the electrification community into more mainstream channels. Thanks for the feature!

Insane self-blinding of the US. They are throwing away their investment in the ocean observation system and the benefits it provides. The only explanation I can think of: they don’t want the people to know what their fossil emissions are doing to our oceans. easternherald.com/2026/06/13/u...

One thing that’s striking about all of this Is that they keep denying offshore wind permits, which are a critical solution to climate change, because they falsely claim it’s bad for whales But then they keep doing things that actually will kill whales
The context of this is that Trump just opened up the three remaining marine national monuments to destructive industrial fishing. The monuments recognize the Indigenous Pacific voyaging legacy. They also support endangered marine wildlife and protect whales, sea turtles, and seabirds.
I got to experience this today. We burn trash in Northern Virginia, 1M tons a year at this Lorton facility. Trash does not just 'go away' - it comes here and leaves as reclaimed metal scrap, ash, and stack exhaust.
It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack. Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections.
