In France & Spain, the current wildfire outbreak has already necessitated the largest evacuation since WWII (since Dunkirk)--& largest ever in peacetime--of over 300,000 people. Widespread, though yet untold, structure loss appears to have occurred (including in suburban areas).
In recent weeks, there has been a remarkable surge in large, intense, fast-moving, and unfortunately in many cases destructive/deadly wildfires in multiple Northern Hemisphere regions spanning a wide range of climates & ecologies, but they all share one key commonality. [Thread]

Back in the olden days, when Western Electric shipped a customer its 1st order of a piece of equipment, it shipped (a) the assembled piece of equipment & (b) a full set of ALL the parts. You could start a stock room or you could build a second system 🙂. I think I’ll start stocking more bike parts.

There is a lot of energy around pausing/slowing/banning data center growth. That energy arises from mismatches between the business model and the regulatory systems we have. Our report addresses those root causes so that if/when those pauses end, we don't get the same bad outcomes.

The role of "clean firm" resources has been bugging me for years. Generally the definition is: - Clean - Indefinitely dispatchable (e.g., to cover a "dunkelflaute") The list of candidate technologies always includes nuclear. How can nuclear, which is not dispatchable, be "clean firm"? 1/

isaac@sevier.io · 3w agoI spoke with a Maine organizer this morning and the primary ask for now is to support raising money for this solidarity fund. The fund has supported a number of community needs since the ICE invasion earlier this year but needs more support in the wake of this murder today.
Chinese EVs *on their own* have cut global oil demand by 1.4 million barrels a day out of the global demand of roughly 50 million barrels a day for transportation. China’s cut - which represents ~15% of the ~10 million barrels of days that it used to use for transportation - is 3% of world demand.

While the post & replies are using this picture to say intensive/monoculture farming is bad, I see the image as a great illustration of tradeoffs. That plot of land gets progressively more crop production at the expense of nature, biodiv, carbon. Same true in reverse: restore nature, fewer crops.

Stacy Mitchell@stacyfmitchell.bsky.social · 4w agoAmid all the corruption, this is especially gross: the billions Congress/Biden approved to build fiber internet in places left behind has been redirected to Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos for doing nothing. Musk has pocketed $738 million so far. Places like rural Louisiana were screwed.
Wrt paper maps and “turn at the broken sign” directions, you bet. For long trips, big maps and a AAA TripTik were the way to go. 🙂 I’m surprised to learn you can still get the spiral-bound, paper, personalized AAA TripTiks. 👍
