I'm going back to in-class exams this semester, which are harder to schedule, less intellectually rigorous, slower to grade, harder to secure, more prone to error, harder to provide disability acommodations for, and use up a lot more paper than online exams. AI makes everything worse.

Got an absurd book review request: 16 chapters, 121k words, 15-day turnaround. For $25 in book credits from the publisher. Seriously? It would take 8 hours for a first read. Whole review, if carefully considered, twice that. Sorry, my time is worth more than $1.56/hr.
You gotta hand it to OpenAI, billing this as a *partnership* between OpenAI & Hugging Face when what actually happened was Hugging Face finding out that OpenAI was using a bunch of bots to exploit security vulnerabilities. Talk about good marketing or whatever you want to call it, by OpenAI.
I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇
You can tell a lot about a person by how they behave when someone they like or that they need something from is accused of sexual assault.
🚨New dataset just dropped🚨 Introducing Places in the Wild: 67,000 RAW-format photographs (45 mpix) densely sampled from 810 places (260 basic-level categories). This is 11x the number of pixels in ImageNet! Preprint is here: arxiv.org/abs/2606.02481 1/
Places in the Wild: A Large, High-Resolution RAW Photograph Dataset for Ecologically Valid Vision Research
Large image datasets have accelerated progress in cognitive neuroscience and computer vision. However, most datasets are low-resolution, internet-sourced JPEGs with unknown capture conditions and limi...

Dear colleagues, PLEASE submit a comment against OMB's proposed rule. Elizabeth wrote great guide on drafting a comment. To submit it, go to www.regulations.gov/search and search for OMB-2026-0034. It will take time & effort to write a good comment, but a worthwhile effort to save our profession.

You know that adage about when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail? **#AI is screwdriver.** We have no idea what the screws are, but people in power think it's a hammer, maybe even the whole toolbox. And we're all … screwed.

The uncritical adoption of AI in science is alarming — we urgently need guard rails

I find the late 2000s to be a really interesting time in cognitive neuroscience. Is this because: a. It was a genuinely interesting time (beginnings of decoding, encoding, RSA; methodological fixes). b. I imprinted on grad school era papers, just as people imprint on songs from high school c. ?
Meet “ASU Atomic,” a subscription platform that claims to offer customized learning modules for fee-paying users. None of the ASU faculty whose course materials were harvested for the module I generated were aware that their image, lectures, lessons, or other teaching materials are being used.
🚨 NSF is already quietly eliminating the SBE Directorate, despite Congress’ mandate that NSF support the behavioral & social sciences. Steps to counter this are in motion. If you - have an SBE proposal under review - serve on an SBE grant panel You can help! Fill out this form: shorturl.at/xuKw2
Share Your Story: Impacts of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF)
Following the release of the President's Budget Request (PBR) on April 3rd, NSF quickly and quietly took steps to begin to dismantle the SBE Directorate. The Federation of Associations in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) wants to hear about how the SBE Directorate at NSF has supported your research and career. Your stories help FABBS communicate to policymakers and the public what’s at stake when the federal government fails to fund critical sciences. We may follow up for clarification, but we will not share your name or institution publicly without your permission.

It’s a shame that my students’ generation doesn’t know the joy of getting to the stage of friendship when you’re allowed to flip through your buddy’s music collection and bond over the obscure and/or cringe music you both love.
JOB ALERT: PhD opening in my lab! @cimecunitrento.bsky.social in Italy, as part of an Italian FIS3 starting grant. The project will use advanced analysis methods of MEG data to investigate how our world's naturalistic hierarchical structure facilitates predictive neural processing.
Postdoc opening in Applied Mathematics at Brown! Bridging APMA + brain science or CS. Two-year appointment starting July 2026 — review begins April 1! Great opportunity to collaborate with @carneyinstitute.bsky.social faculty at the Nancy G. Zimmerman Center for Computational Brain Science.
Neat!

🚨New preprint alert! 🚨 Do multimodal LLMs (VLMs) reason about high-level visual perception like humans do? We asked over 2000 human observers and 18 VLMs to describe scenes using 15 different tasks, ranging from general knowledge, affordances, affect, sensory experiences, and future prediction. 1/
Yeah, the world is a dumpster fire right now. But the feeling of celebrating students’ first paper submission? Still magical!

Hey #visionscience friends - I'm looking to touch base with someone who knows lots about color, esp. contrast/assimilation effects. I'm working on a video about something and I'm worried I'm getting tangled up in part of the explanation. Thanks!
