Just gonna toss out there that one of the central facts of US politics--all politics, really--is that the general populace knows very little about who holds power, how gov't works, what policies do & don't exist, the balance of economic forces, or really much of anything outside their lifeworlds.

Update: The tropical weather feature of great interest--Tropical Storm (& soon hurricane) #Marie--has now developed. Marie's track will dictate potential CA impacts over Labor Day; uncertainty remains high, w/significant impacts possible (but direct landfall unlikely). [Thread]

For decades, L.A. people always had a "yeah, but it's a dry heat," chambered as one of our defenses for living here. Now, the heat is wet, fire season is all year round, and the industry that brought many of us here is dead. But at least it's ranked in the top 10 most expensive cities in the world.

I watched 'I, Claudius' last night and it really is brilliant. It doesn't age. Excellent acting and script. The very best of BBC drama. In particular, Derek Jacobi and John Hurt were mesmerising.
