there's a screenshot of a graph going around today of rising temperatures, some people are pointing out it's for just London, or asking about the source here's the London one higher resolution, China, USA, and world. University of Reading scientist aggregated 8 sources: showyourstripes.info/c/globe

temperature change in London 1960 to present relative to average temperature over that range left of 1990. it's mostly blue lines hanging below the bar with occasional red spikes. nearly everything to the right of 1990 is red above bar and rising steadily. The same graph, but for China is actually even more exaggerated with fewer red spikes before 1990 and much taller spikes in recent years.usa graph has just several red spikes left of 1990 and almost no blue spikes to the right of 1990, meaning that they're all dangling below the line left of 1990 and increasingly above the line to the right of that point in time.same graph but for the global temperature change and here it's even more Stark with basically no red lines left of 1980 as they all dip below. there's a clear line trajectory increasing straight up into red above the line growing steadily higher especially post 2000 to present.

I'd be all "I don't mean to alarm anybody" but kinda thinking we may be well past that into the territory now of all "I actually DO mean to alarm everybody" 📢 +adding alt

During the Create Your Own Novel panel at SDCC this year, the best proposal I have ever heard from another panelist was made, specifically: writers should have walk-on music like wrestlers when we come out for panels.

I feel like you are supposed to want to take your "brain off" books on vacation but I am (mostly) packing with the intention of doing the opposite because my brain might actually be unfatigued enough to enjoy my "brain on" books.

All this talk about the early, terrifying days of Covid .. and I couldn't help but look back at a project I worked on at the time. We memorialized the lives of people who ran into the burning building. Time well spent and worth a moment of yours: www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

People who think it's okay to destroy books that have trained AI because AI will be able to give you whatever answers you went looking for in the book miss that AI might be able to give you an answer, but reading the book teaches you to understand the answer.

I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”

Yesterday at the Renaissance Faire Jacques ze Whipper ended up picking my kiddo as the "kid he talks to" for the show and at one point tried to convince her to dab, including getting the crowd to chant her name. She refused. He gave her props for resisting peer pressure and the crowd cheered. <3

Republicans have gone through the dictionary — far left, radical, socialist, and now “communist.” These attacks don’t work. It’s not the label that matters, it’s the policies. And progressive ideas are very popular across this country.

Just told a friend "the older I get, the more my mouth writes checks my colon can't cash" to describe the dissonance between the spice level that my mouth can handle (extremely high) and that my digestion can (not as high).
