I’m interested in any political imagination for accountability. It has to be proactive & retroactive. It has to be spectacular. And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.

NY Tmes exec editor Joe Kahn said in 2024 that the issue of democracy's survival was not a top priority in his newsroom's coverage. Now Trump is sending federal agents to NYT reporters' homes to deliver subpoenas over coverage he doesn't like. I wonder if democracy is a priority for Joe now.

The Trump regime issued subpoenas to NY Times journalists over their reporting on Trump’s new Qatari-donated Air Force One. NYT called the subpoenas “an extraordinary escalation in Trump’s efforts to threaten and intimidate independent news organizations.” The dictator Trump hates the free press.

If the GOP really wanted to get rid of folks in America who are undermining our constitutional democracy and destroying our freedoms then I suggest they start in earnest with their base.

The hill I will die on: any Immigration Debate is a Racism Debate. Stopping people coming into a country illegally is not an immigration issue, it’s a security issue, like stopping drugs or guns. Any other immigration talk is just about keeping out people you don’t like.

Last week, I was sitting in an arbitration hearing against the Post, in which Post leadership labeled me as a threat. And excused away the purging of Black opinion writers, questioning our merit. Today, I’m receiving a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

i’ve been asked a few times recently about why it’s so important to me as a journalist to describe things plainly—like referring to the planned ICE warehouses as concentration camps. seeing the term used in a letter to the secretary of defense is proof that journalists’ word choices have impact.
