Treating the end of Duration of Status as a technical regulatory change misses its historical significance. Student visas have always been demographic policy. The question isn't how long students can stay. It's what kind of university—and what kind of country—the US is trying to build. 19/

What I actually want: * I read and cite real sources * AI creates accurate bibtex from sketchy notes ("so-and-so's paper from SOUPS 2 years ago about topic") * AI cleans up the formatting so all references to one conference are formatted the same, titles with acronyms get capitailzed right ...

So I just got probably my fifth email this year from another AI startup focused on citation verification (wanting me to do ads for them). This time as I was looking at their website (tagline: "Write your paper with 100% correct references") I thought... wait, why do we actually want this? 🧵

It’s truly astonishing to see how comprehensively the US government is tearing down every part of the system that has made it up until now a world-leading power in science, research, and technological development. The entire world will suffer from this wanton destruction.

There still is absolutely no plan for how to finance & operate our universities without foreign students or restored federal funding, & the public still has zero awareness of the magnitude of this existential crisis, because our leaders have been totally absent from the public stage.

Meanwhile the ACM Digital Library is creating AI “podcasts” of papers with no author approval that of course contain inaccuracies (including e.g. misgendering authors) I don’t care about copyright. Legal /= ethical & academic institutions are embarrassing themselves www.404media.co/asu-atomic-a...

University Professors Disturbed to Find Their Lectures Chopped Up and Turned Into AI Slop

ASU Atomic, a new tool in beta at Arizona State University, takes faculty lectures and chops them into extremely short clips, that AI then attempts to turn into learning materials.

One way companies could try to do this is requiring parents to upload a sensitive legal document like a birth certificate or social security card, along with an ID and a selfie / face scan to do a full identity check proving they are who they say they are. That's a privacy nightmare.

I sent a classified letter to House and Senate colleagues about a secret interpretation of surveillance law that every American should be concerned about. Representative Massie is right. The Constitution requires EVERY member to vote against a clean reauthorization.

A tweet from Representative Thomas Massie that reads:

I just viewed 2 Top Secret FISA docs.
1) FISA Court opinion that raises serious concerns about FBI implementation of FISA 702.
2) letter by Senator Wyden describing a secret government interpretation of FISA law.
The Constitution requires I vote No on FISA 702 reauthorization.

WE DID IT! Our illegal union @uam-umd.bsky.social is a lot less illegal today. 12,000 contingent faculty in MD just won the right to collectively bargain. Life-changing win for teachers and students. Only happened bc thousands of people worked together to beat our bosses in the statehouse.
