Except for religious studies, the graduates of these "loan ineligible" majors are disproportionately women. Fans of this policy have probably never considered that social worker, cosmetician, teachers aide, etc might be low-paying jobs *because* women do them. newrepublic.com/post/213446/...

"As for the letter’s insistence that admissions be 'based on merit'? 'They mean they think too many Black people have gotten into places they never should have gotten into,' she said." I have gotta learn to be more straightforward www.chronicle.com/article/for-...

In the real world you don't need to ask for extra tume as an accommodation bc no one is timing you with a stopwatch. You can just work longer hours & not even tell anyone. & as to point about notetakers elsewhere in thread, in real world you can use a computer w/ whatever software to take notes.
As a former teacher, somewhat recent law student, and now practicing disability-rights lawyer, I actually don’t have any strong feelings about this But I do have one observation to offer, which is that “extra time“ is rarely if ever an accommodation afforded to workers
Sociology studies how social structure, institutions, and cultural beliefs affect individuals, & vice versa. Why is this threatening to the far right? Because it challenges self-serving narratives that explain away outsized wealth & power as natural, inevitable, or divinely or genetically decreed.
I think a lot about what needs to get done about climate change. We know the physical science 10 times better than we know the social science that we need to fix it.
Spotted lanternfly soup is one of the New England’s most popular soups, second only to clam chowder. Ailanthus trees are popularly known as the Tree of Heaven because spotted lanternflies are harvested from them in order to make this delicious soup.
It's safe to assume that all major LLMs are scraping Bluesky data to train future models. As an open protocol, Bluesky is one of the few sources of fresh human-generated content that anybody can gobble up. So all this is probably going in the models. There are submarines in the Great Lakes.

Guess what happened that year & in the time since then? Applications & enrollments by students wanting to specialize in Creative Writing increased, & we've had our greatest numbers of CW graduates in years, 2 years in a row--making the college money while getting negative support for student needs.
A year and a half ago, the English grad programs I direct were targeted for suspension & potential shuttering, especially for Creative Writing. We gathered data & made arguments that we make money for the college & suspending CW would net $0 financial change. The Provost & President did it anyway.
shutting down academic programs is virtually never about the quality of those programs and often it’s not really even about their actual student numbers or “appeal” very little management policy towards the humanities is specifically “about” research or teaching in the humanities at all, in fact
Q for academics, especially sociology and related fields: has anyone written up a guide for advising PhD students on applying to non-US job markets (either a specific non-US market or more general strategy)?
"...but we must remember that the administration is pursuing specific goals, namely the resegregation of higher education and greater stratification of institutions" Well this Dominique Baker has thoughts!
Great conversation between @bakerdphd.bsky.social, @aaup.org member and associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware and AFT Wisconsin President Jon Shelton at the higher education breakfast this morning. Read all about it here. www.aft.org/news/practic...
The number of people who die or are seriously in car crashes this year will almost certainly be higher than the number who get even mild cases of this parasite, but here we are not eating lettuce while continuing to drive on the highway. Humans are so interesting.
Are you currently enrolled at a US higher education institution and have a disability? Please consider participating in a brief survey about students' experiences w/the accessibility/disability services office. 1/2
Device bans, no matter the reason, raise the same disability fairness issues as laptop bans. Wrap disabled students into the q of what is best. Forcing PWDs into an accommodations exception is itself unfair. Ruth Colker’s laptop ban piece lays this all out: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Universal Design: Stop Banning Laptops!
Banning laptops in the classroom constitutes a needless barrier to academic performance that is increasingly common at the university level. In this article, I

As the mom of a cisgender girl athlete, I'm worried not only about the potential invasion of privacy (and bodily autonomy) but about the pressure that the threat of gender inspection could put on girl athletes (cis and trans) to present themselves in stereotypically gendered ways.
The ban is heinous for what it does to transgender athletes. But if you think cisgender girls and young women won’t be caught up in the fallout, too, you are woefully ignorant

I have now been on the phone with CVS for 1 hr 10 mins. The representative is just typing & breathing heavily into the phone & has been doing so for 20 minutes I think to avoid me giving a negative survey after they end the call. Because no one can remove someone else's phone number from my account.
Today in the annals of American medicine: on the phone with the pharmacy insurance, which is the same company as the pharmacy, trying to deal with an eye drop prescription. Last month the 8 ml bottle lasted 30 days. This month it was dispensed as lasting 120 days (& costing 2x copay). But that was
Today in bad push polls (PVD mayoral race edition): Native American & multiracial people not welcome in this survey & opinion answer choices make no sense. The gender question was bad also but I forgot to screenshot.

AK politics are wild part 99833. Dan S Sullivan (R-AK) challenged newcomer Dan J Sullivan's run for Senate, claiming w/o evidence that it's a plot to help Dem Peltola. AK has RCV so elections often bring 1st-timers. GOP-led Div of Elections: Dan J can't run. How is this decision constitutional?
True for adults in the hospital as well. Families can spend hundreds of dollars parking at hospitals that aren't served by public transit in locations where parking is typically free for those patronizing nearby businesses.
Or we could just, you know, make parking free for these families. Sure, the parking provider wouldn't make as much. But maybe we shouldn't start from the assumption that parking systems AT A HOSPITAL should primarily accommodate the parking company's profit margin.

The point is to normalize prospective monitoring of possible pregnancies. So arguing "cannabis is safe" or "people are responsible" doesn't work. We have to say "They're trying to normalize violating our privacy. They're starting with socially disfavored groups because they know it's unpopular AF."
