i know this is beside the point, but i love the rat.
NEW: CWA union members have inflated a giant rat and deployed a wall of red flags representing laid off Xbox workers outside the Bethesda office in Rockville. The protest was timed to coincide with a visit from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who is apparently at the studio today.
without the structure of conference sessions I have again forgotten to eat food
Post conference illness is upon me. I wore a mask through the airplanes/airport and in big sessions, but there were many shared meals -- a significant germ vector. So far I am just very congested and stuffed up.
age 16: Computers are amazing! I'm going to do amazing things with computers! age 46: explaining to the fourth person this week why Chat GPT is not a replacement for a functional search engine or the library or friends
Trying to get my phone and headphones charged up so I can watch the new gamechanger in some corner of this airport.
This goes for indie publishers as well! Buy books Write reviews (or even just star ratings) Tell people about the stories you've loved or are excited for* *online & in person! Request them through your library Ask your local bookshops to order them Word of mouth makes a huge difference for us.
"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!
Do you wear wigs? Have you worn wigs? WILL you wear wigs??

My standard reply to all ai book scammers that I am a practicing witch and placing a curse on them unless they cease their wicked ways. Highly recommend this strategy to other writers & publishing folk. Twice now I've had scammers email back to ask me to lift the curse.
I heard Spider-Man 4 was the best MCU movie in a while and it turns out it's because Spider-Man learned what a script was and shared this discovery with his coworkers.
popping it in here because it makes me laugh every time. he also talks about how spider-man got six months of extra time to work on the script (and hire a director lmao) bc of the odyssey schedule www.gq.com/story/matt-d...
Have heard from one conference goer that there was one panel that included one person who used generative AI for children's programming, which I blissfully avoided. All of the keynotes and sessions I attended were focused on the human experience of creativity in writing and illustrating.
One of the beautiful things of this conference is that nobody, not a single presenter, panelist, keynote speaker, fellow attendee, has even mentioned AI or LLMs. I feel like I am breathing fresh air again.
I need to get up and find supper but I am on zero personal battery.
Conference has concluded. I will commence disassociating for the next four days.
Determined to make the first session of the day today, I went to bed at 9:00.
I drank my cider WAY TOO FAST and now I am attempting to get reasonably sober before returning to my hotel room.

Not beating the Canada is a smalltown allegations by finding out I am friends with the cousin from a delegate from Cypress at this conference. Me: do you have a cousin in Saskatoon named [redacted]. Him: YES! Eavesdropper: you gotta be kidding me.
Spending thousands of dollars in French classes so I don't embarrass myself when ordering croque matin.
I attended the award ceremony and dinner for the Hans Christian Andersen awards tonight, and I was very moved by the speeches by the winners. Lots of folks in the audience (and on stage) who were openly crying and I feel wrung out and blessed at the same time.

“This rule will worsen salmon habitat conditions and without question that will reduce salmon stocks,” said Tandy Wilbur, a Swinomish senator and fisheries manager. “I fear for the health of our people and our cultural lifeways.” #GreenSky
Once I am in the midst of it, I love being in a new city. The travel stresses me the fuck out, but once I figure out a bit of public transit and get a feel for what I can walk to from my hotel, I feel so free.
You have to understand, as men, we’re warriors. We’re genetically destined to dominate and forge a stronger, better world. That’s why our dicks fall off if we read a novel written by a woman.
