The VAT cut to electricity bills is an important acknowledgement that immediate action is needed to cut energy costs. We urge Andy Burnham to make good on his pledge to ease the cost-of-living pressures leaving millions of older people living in poverty. www.independentage.org/news-media/p...

Not my usual Saturday reading, but a powerful report has been released today from the Work and Pensions @hoccommittees.parliament.uk on their inquiry into the Transition to the State Pension age. An important topic, as the age started rising this year and it's likely it won't stop where it is now.

This week @independentage.bsky.social were in Westminster sharing new research looking at the impact 100% take up of social security entitlements could have on #olderpeople in poverty. Full report next week. Great to have the Pensions Minister join us to share what he thinks could make a difference
Too many older people are cutting their water usage to manage soaring costs. The UK Govt must introduce a national social tariff to ensure older people on a low income receive consistent support to afford this essential. Sign the #TappedOut petition 🖋️ campaigns.independentage.org/page/187255/...
#CouncilTax is a BIG bill and if you're trying to stretch a low income to cover your #costs, it can loom large! Council Tax Reduction can take the #bill for someone living on a low income past State Pension age down to £0. Our new research shows that 1/2 of eligible older people are missing out
Council Tax Reduction could be transformative for older people on low incomes but barriers with access and funding mean take-up is far too low. New research with Policy in Practice highlights how changes could improve take-up and reduce poverty in older age. www.independentage.org/policy-and-r...
1.2 million older people aren't receiving Pension Credit despite being eligible. Our free, anonymous finance calculator is a great way to make sure the people you support aren't missing out. Take a look today: https://independentage.entitledto.co.uk/home/start
Off to book club tonight. As usual, not read the book and not 100% sure I even know what it is 📖🪱 #bookclub
Where you live shouldn’t determine the level of financial support you receive for your water bills, but the current system means too many older people are having to ration this essential. Sign the #TappedOut petition for a national social tariff: campaigns.independentage.org/page/187255/...
#Pensions can sound dry and techy but they matter. For too many of the people we speak to at @independentage.bsky.social they have been let down by systems that haven't supported them to build savings during their working life. Reaching later life in this situation, is a cold hard reality.
At @independentage.bsky.social we were pleased to support this letter. #Energybills are a big worry for the older people on low income that we support and there are opportunities for the UK Govt to put solutions in place that will protect the most financially insecure #fuelpoverty #costofliving
📝We've written to Ministers, and continue to call for guaranteed outcomes, independent advice, clear consumer rights and an enforceable commitment on energy costs. Read more: www.endfuelpoverty.org.uk/civil-societ... #EndFuelPoverty #EnergyBills #CostOfLiving [2/2]
If you're over State Pension age, on a low income and live with a partner who is below #StatePension age, the rules say you can't receive the social securuty entitlements meant for #pensioners. Today we joined with 12 other organisations to call for this unfair rule to be reversed #costofliving
With 12 other organisations, we are calling for an end to the unfair mixed-age couples rule. As many as 70,000 older people are missing out on financial support because of their relationship - this isn't right. #FixMixedAgeRule Read our open letter: independentage.org/MAC-open-let...
The #KingsSpeech set out new proposed laws, but hardly anything on tackling cost of living. The people @independentage.bsky.social support need legislative change urgently including national social tariffs for water and energy. Each would make a big difference #costofliving #livingstandards
The #KingsSpeech did not go far enough in addressing pensioner poverty We often support older people on dangerously low incomes that do not even cover the basics. From social tariffs to enhancing social security, the UK Govt can and must act. The time is now. www.independentage.org/news-media/p...
Our Policy & Campaigns Manager, Sam, attended Independent Age event Thursday to talk about the rising cost of water. No one should have to worry about whether they can afford water & a social tariff could make a big difference - You can sign the petition: https://bit.ly/4b9ohNy
We have an *extremely* important announcement to make. From Wednesday, we will be launching our puffin live cam, coming to you from the Farne Islands. So you can watch puffins all day long. In celebration, please enjoy this clip of puffins being really busy for 39 seconds straight.

Today the UK Government released up to date stats on the number of people living below the #poverty line, including how many older people are in this situation. Worryingly the new data shows that the number of pensioners in poverty has increased by 200,000 compared to the year before #costofliving
