#CouncilTax is a BIG bill and if you're trying to stretch a low income to cover your #costs, it can loom large! Council Tax Reduction can take the #bill for someone living on a low income past State Pension age down to £0. Our new research shows that 1/2 of eligible older people are missing out

Independent Age@independentage.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Council Tax Reduction could be transformative for older people on low incomes but barriers with access and funding mean take-up is far too low. New research with Policy in Practice highlights how changes could improve take-up and reduce poverty in older age. www.independentage.org/policy-and-r...

An older man smiles as he stands in his doorway, he wears a striped polo shirt and glasses. Text reads: Missing out on millions: The Council Tax Reduction pensioners in England are missing out on and why change is needed. Despite being eligible, 1.4 million older people in England are missing out on this vital support. Independent Age is calling on the UK Government to better fund local authorities to increase take-up, reducing poverty in later life.

If you're over State Pension age, on a low income and live with a partner who is below #StatePension age, the rules say you can't receive the social securuty entitlements meant for #pensioners. Today we joined with 12 other organisations to call for this unfair rule to be reversed #costofliving

With 12 other organisations, we are calling for an end to the unfair mixed-age couples rule. As many as 70,000 older people are missing out on financial support because of their relationship - this isn't right. #FixMixedAgeRule Read our open letter: independentage.org/MAC-open-let...

13 organisations' logos support the #FixMixedAgeRule campaign. Organisations are: Independent Age, Age Scotland, Unison, Ageing Without Children, National Pensioners Convention, Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland, Wise Age, NFOP, Older People's Commissioner for Wales, Age UK, Reengage, Civil Service Pensioners' Alliance and National Association of Retired Police Officers.

The #KingsSpeech set out new proposed laws, but hardly anything on tackling cost of living. The people @independentage.bsky.social support need legislative change urgently including national social tariffs for water and energy. Each would make a big difference #costofliving #livingstandards

Independent Age@independentage.bsky.social · 3mo ago

The #KingsSpeech did not go far enough in addressing pensioner poverty We often support older people on dangerously low incomes that do not even cover the basics. From social tariffs to enhancing social security, the UK Govt can and must act. The time is now. www.independentage.org/news-media/p...

An anonymous quote from an older person reads: I'm making cutbacks just to survive. Even the things I need, I need to count the pennies.

Our Policy & Campaigns Manager, Sam, attended Independent Age event Thursday to talk about the rising cost of water. No one should have to worry about whether they can afford water & a social tariff could make a big difference - You can sign the petition: https://bit.ly/4b9ohNy

Today the UK Government released up to date stats on the number of people living below the #poverty line, including how many older people are in this situation. Worryingly the new data shows that the number of pensioners in poverty has increased by 200,000 compared to the year before #costofliving
