History, folklore, music, archaeology, books, Guardian reader. Castle botherer and humanist church crawler. Retired railwayman. Morris dancer and Mummers player. And trees. Lots of trees.
Starting another thread, if anyone is interested (you never know!) of what I've been reading, starting with this beauty. Enjoyed reading this and it's a handsome book.
Slow handclap, @labouruk.bsky.social, very slow handclap. Despite the current climate crisis, you do this. For me as a voter you make it impossible for me to vote for you ever again. No jobs on a dead planet.
Government contracts to require job creation instead of green targets under new rules

This is yet another 'rewilding' article calling for better landscape management. We used to have degrees in landscape management but they've all gone. Please just bring landscape management back.
Done properly, rewilded landscapes are more fire-resistant.
Meet Tigernos, one of Britain’s earliest named sailors! ⚓️ A Briton and Roman fleet veteran, his story is recorded on the bronze Lanchester Diploma issued by Antoninus Pius in AD 150. It grants him honourable discharge from the Classis Germanica and Roman citizenship. #EpigraphyTuesday #Archaeology
Well this is heartbreakingly horrifyingly beautiful.
'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)
What an extraordinary spire! Amazing!

if any of you know anyone who still thinks that the flagshaggers are 'just proud of their country', i want you to sit down with them and read these court documents together
Leaders of flag-raising group Raise the Colours Oxfordshire placed trackers on highway workers’ cars to find out their home addresses, the High Court has heard. RTC then attempted to intimidate the highway staff into no longer removing flags by repeating their addresses to them.
I doubt anyone will care, particularly, but let's do this: 1. The Earthsea Trilogy (does that count as one book? I certainly bought it as one book.) It's not an exaggeration to say it changed my life, and I get something new from it with every reread.
1 like = 1 book question 📚💙
"History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts" I remain astounded by how loud and wrong people are about what history actually is.
It's raining! It's raining! It's raining! (I never thought I'd write that and be happy about it!!
In honour of #InternationalOwlDay. (It may be a bit niche [or maybe not, seeing the popularity of #TheOdyssey], but it's my favourite of any memes I've made.)
The most recent book on Stonehenge - and the earliest I've got. @suegreaney.bsky.social's book is the best introduction to Stonehenge that I can imagine. And very up to date - the Altar Stone is known to be from NE Scotland for instance. And excellent illustrations and reconstructions. 1/2

I've just seen the cover to the Complete Trumptonshire blu-ray, and now I need you all to see it too, so there can be an outbreak of delighted cooing and "aw" noises all across Bluesky. It's done my heart the power of good, it really has.
The Painted Chamber in the Palace at Westminster was regarded as one of the marvels of medieval Europe because of its magnificent decoration. Historians have debated whether this work was carried out between 1263 & 1272 under the patronage of Henry III, or later between 1292 & 1297 under Edward I.
It is shocking to discover that designating AI data centres as “National Critical Infrastructure” means water companies are prohibited from restricting water to them - even in times of drought. Households will lose water first. #ClimateEmergency
Came to Sparham to see one of my idols. The dance of death paintings. Painted in the 1480's. Lovely chappies. Gives me hope that in my afterlife some cool skeleton will choose me!

I can confirm that the Wombles 'Minuetto Allegretto' is the stickiest, most persistent, most annoying earworm I think I have ever had. If it continues I will NOT live to be old.
