The same playbook that destroyed the West's solar panel, EV, and steel industries just arrived in your computer's memory chip. And this time it is moving faster.

China's ChangXin Memory Technologies, known as CXMT, just recorded Q1 2026 revenue of 50.8 billion yuan, a 719% increase year-on-year. Net profit hit 33 billion yuan, compared to a 2.83 billion yuan loss in the same quarter last year. The company is now preparing a multibillion-dollar IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Goldman Sachs noted it is "scaling faster and has become materially more profitable than the market had appreciated."

CXMT's DDR5 memory chips are now appearing in Corsair products, one of the most trusted names in consumer PC hardware. HP has placed major orders. Qualcomm has begun custom work with the company. Dell, Asus, and Acer have all made approaches. The three companies that have controlled the global DRAM market for two decades, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, are completely focused on selling to AI data centers. CXMT is filling the gap they left behind, at lower prices, with rapidly improving yield rates now exceeding 80% on its leading node.

Meanwhile, YMTC, China's largest NAND flash memory maker, is already running two factories with 200,000 wafers of monthly output combined, and a third factory comes online later this year. It was blacklisted by the US in 2022. It responded by switching to domestic Chinese equipment suppliers and aggressively expanding capacity anyway.

This is not a story about memory chips. It is a story about industrial strategy. When global memory prices hit record highs, the established cartel of Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron prioritized margins on AI server contracts and left consumer markets undersupplied. Beijing saw the gap and directed state-backed manufacturers to fill it at prices that undercut established players. The moment CXMT achieves sufficient market share, it will do exactly what Chinese manufacturers have done in every industry they have entered: compress margins across the entire sector until Western competitors can no longer sustain investment in the next generation.

Chinese chips already broke DDR3 and DDR4 pricing on the way into global markets. DDR5 is next.

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."

From a Reddit forum, a photo of a can of coconut milk with a blue label, papyrus text and a flip-top, on a sidewalk. It seems to hover because there's no visible shadow. The pavement is sort of unevenly colored, with bright spots, and the grass along it is green and lush.
