Yesterday we went to Circus World in Baraboo and they had a really interesting exhibit on Catholic chaplains to circuses! Also talked about religious sisters who lived and worked with the circus.

How Can We Help You? Throughout the 20th century, the Catholic Church had special commissions to address the care of itinerant populations. Fr. David Hennessey first received a part-time circus ministry position in 1972, but a few years later he was appointed to serve Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (RBBB) on a full-time basis. Fr. Jack Toner took over as RBBB's chaplain in 1983, carrying out traditional duties such as leading mass. teaching catechism. and performing baptisms, weddings. and confirmations. He also visited the sick and injured and was available for counseling. Fr. Jerry Hogan was appointed national circus chaplain in 1993, retaining his North Andover. MA congregation while visiting the shows regularly. He was a beloved part of the circus family during his almost 30 years in the role, and like those who came before led an ecumenical ministry. The organization also serves migrant and refugee populations, along with traveling workers associated with carnivals and car racing circuits. Fr. Francis Cancro currently fills the role, along with a small group of other individuals who provide a ministry of presence for dozens of circuses around the country.Theee religious stoles and an altar. The stoles are very colorful and have clowns and elephant feet on them.Lives Shared The Little Sisters of Jesus formed in Algeria in 1939 to serve people whose nomadic lives made it difficult to have regular church contact. The Little Sisters first traveled with Switzerland's Circus Pilatus in the 1950s and later worked with a dozen other European shows. In 1978, srs. Priscilla and Jo moved to the U.S. and began working in concessions and wardrobe at Circus Vargas. They were with the show until 1985, living in a small trailer with a chapel in their van. Over the next 20 years the Little Sisters traveled with four additional circuses. They shared everyday life with circus employees, breaking down barriers and helping to demonstrate unity among different types of people Left. Courtesy Little Sisters of Jeus Sisters Dorothy Fabritze and Bernard Overkamp of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus joined Roberts Bros. Circus in 2000. They lived in a trailer with the bedroom reconfigured as an altar and received special permission from the Vatican to carry and serve Communion. The sisters held circus jobs because they felt it important to do the same type of work as the people they lived among. They also taught religious classes and offered counseling. The pair joined Ringling Bros. and Bamum & Bailey Circus (RBBB) in 2004. Another day on the trapeze rig! Working on my half swing and I caught my straddle whip again. Yay! Also felt pretty good about the pike whip but didn’t try catching it today. Maybe next time. 😎

Cut my finger and it wouldn’t stop bleeding. Turns out if you are actively bleeding they see you right away at urgent care. 😂 Cleaned and superglued and out really quickly!
