Tennessee National Guard members assigned to a federal anti-crime task force in Memphis fatally shot an armed 20-year-old man in the back, according to an autopsy report obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, contradicting police accounts that said the man was facing the troops when they fired.

Autopsy shows Tennessee National Guard fatally shot 20-year-old armed man in the back

An autopsy shows that an armed man killed by the Tennessee National Guard was shot in the back. The report that Tyrin Johnson’s family shared with The Associated Press on Thursday contradicts accounts by law enforcement.

The US president declaring himself the greatest in history, above Lincoln and Washington, would have been considered a secular form of blasphemy as little as two years ago - and a sign of profound mental instability besides. Today it’s nothing. We’re supposed to take it in stride.

finland's per capita gdp is like 60% of the US's. people there are some of the happiest on the planet despite having miserable weather and 18 hours of darkness half the year. every single US billionaire tantrum-if acted upon would-barely move gdp. imprison the ringleaders, tax the rest 90%

ive kind of landed on my position here, which is: i don't care if it fixes NOTHING economically. it fixes the fact that they can buy elections and destabilize governments. it's an issue of national security

NEW: ProPublica’s @jessecoburn.bsky.social chronicled how a Texas artillery factory failed to produce a single usable shell. The fiasco ended up costing the Army half a billion dollars. Here are the lapses in planning and execution our reporting uncovered.

The Costly Blunders in the Army’s $533 Million Fiasco

ProPublica revealed how a rushed effort to arm Ukraine with artillery shells wasted half a billion dollars in taxpayer funding. Here are the biggest takeaways from that reporting.

Never forget the Luddites, one of the most powerful organized labor resistance groups in history, who attacked machines because employers were using mechanization to deskill their trades, depress wages, and eliminate jobs. Now their name is used as an insult instead of a call to action.

this ties in with a rant I sent in a while back about how "efficiency" is anti-human and should be resisted instead of fetishized whatever is good for capitalism is bad for human beings, without exception

Still thinking about the Luddites I came across this. How fascinating it is to watch what might be the germ of a neo-Luddite movement around surveillance technology. And a guy writing a nudge-wink, fuck-the-man, banger of a country song makes me feel American in a way that for once isn’t pejorative.

The people outraged over the academic freedom of Cofnas (which is apparently the freedom to harass & drive a man to suicide) I dont recall your outrage for the profs who got harassed & fired for speaking on Palestine I'm just a silly gal, I guess I dont understand what I'm free to do as an academic

For the sake of artists, the planet, and my own sanity, i have to believe that the bubble will pop. I know it will cause some economic problems and people will lose jobs etc. but the world will be better place without gen ai

Re-drawing based on the scene from Emperor’s New Groove, where a squirrel threatens to pop a balloon. Text says “pop the bubble, fuck ai”

John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats offered an explanation that makes the most sense to me. My paraphrase: nursing is a huge, highly in-demand profession that offers a pathway to economic stability (particularly to women) that you can get into with test-prep effort rather than academic prowess

I honestly have a lot to say about this, and it goes a couple of directions. In the nursing program I attended, we had great teachers and many great young nurses. But pedagogically, the model was absolutely "teaching to the test"

I will never, ever understand anti-VAX nurses. 27% of hospital staff is huge. Why the resistance is nurses and other staff but not doctors raises the question the nature of nursing education and how the day to day doesn’t seem to reinforce the science aspect of the training.

What that means is there was information you were going to need to pass the state boards, and, culturally in the program & within the curriculum, the assumption was that you wanted this information strictly for the purposes of passing the exams, and, later, the state boards.

If you wanted to be class valedictorian & shine like a star in the field down the road, word to Joel, you could do that! But most people don't want to do that (why? getting there), and, when they got out into the workplace, you'd see 'em --

the problem was not, and is not, "nurses." It's the need for job stability & security, and the need for the economy to supply workers to hospitals. that's how we end up with anti-vax nurses.

Get full employment, get full housing, do like Jesus said to do and feed & clothe & house everybody, and the number of people willing to go through nursing school to get out in the field and be terrible at it will plummet

in the interim, yes, it'd help if, pedagogically, nursing programs were able to convey that it matters more for us to understand the principles in play than to pass the test --

but how can we say that with a straight face to people who just want to make sure they pay rent, have food on the table, and don't drown in a sea of rising costs? "you need to care" is a cold thing to tell a person walking a wire with no safety nets underneath

So the problem, as most will have gathered, is capitalism, which can't be dismantled in a day, but whose thumbprint -- whose toxic mix of "the individual matters more than the community" and "you'd better make some money or you'll starve" has a thousand faces,

I think most nurses are good people but what's the deal with like 15 percent of them being complete freaks who believe every conspiracy theory, including those that contradict their own medical practice?

Look I know the American state department has terrorized the entire globe for the last 80 years and it is a blight on humanity, but what you dont understand is that they have done the exact opposite in this one particular country and I've made this my entire politics, they would not lie about this.
