My advice to EU leaders (who aren't far right): Offer help to the country concerned if it’s asked for, express sorrow for the deaths of people who are being manipulated into crossing borders illegally. Investigate and publish any co-ordination. Remove benefits to countries that weaponise migration.

Good piece. A thread on some comments I made yesterday on Times Radio. Two things can be true at the same time: 1. It’s very bad to have 60,000 people storm a border, and 70+ deaths. 2. European leaders' responses were opportunistic and disproportionate, and made incidents like this more likely.
Vance, Farage and Weidel posted fear-mongering messages about a Spanish migrant crisis that weren't true. They haven't retracted them. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Good piece by Jefferson Pooley on how LLM-powered “research” tools like Google’s “Deep Research” and Elsevier’s “AI Discovery” likely strengthen the “Matthew effect”: highly-cited authors are amplified while undercited (often female) authors are increasingly ignored: blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci...

AI research tools are trained on a literature that is structured by an unequal distribution of attention. Does their use simply recreate these biases ?

Orbán gave us a 2-min Facebook update. No one's hurt, gas is still flowing, but then went on to emphasise that Europe is facing an energy crisis, that we're dependent on 🇷🇺 gas. The rest is anti-Ukrainian propaganda, claiming 🇺🇦 "has been working for years on cutting off Europe from Russian energy"
🇭🇺 has 3 special legal orders (state of danger, emergency and war). The country's been in a "state of danger" since 2020 thanks to Fidesz. In a state of danger, elections can be held. In a state of emergency or war, they cannot. Let's hope they don't try to use this as a pretence to cancel elections
