I'm giving two talks in the next few weeks on national health and nationhood discourses under Keir Starmer. First up is the webinar series from Corpus Network Chile, and the second is the Language, Ideology and Power research group at Lancaster. Both talks will be online :)

In this work, we find - in two key ways - that people do not see the Conservatives as the main opposition. Parties' importance in the media and their prominence seems to be far more a function of their polling than their seats in parliament, as the Lib Dems have known for a long time.

NEW! Mega thread on the Tories... Work from the NPRC team @nuffieldcollege.bsky.social shows two critical electoral evaluations that spell much deeper trouble for the Tories. Follow @justinrobinsonpol.bsky.social and @martamiori.bsky.social as this work builds. Why do the findings matter? …

Ever wondered what attributes are relevant in your conjoint experiment? And what assumptions you need to estimate it? Asya and I got you covered. In a new working paper we propose the APNS: the probability that an attribute's level change is necessary and sufficient for the selection of a profile.

Great thread by Vincent on what may help explain the party’s breakthrough last month. Looking across Berlin’s 1,500 precincts, a higher share of households renting was weakly associated with higher support for Die Linke in 2023. By 2026, that relationship had become markedly stronger. (1/3) 🧵

Germany's Die Linke won last month's Berlin election on a pledge to socialize ~220k flats owned by large landlords. A thread on why housing expropriation is a successful campaign promise, how Berlin's flats became an asset class, and what expropriation would do. 🧵

After a year (already?!) at @politikuhh.bsky.social I'll give my Antrittsvorlesung 21/10🎉 I'm shy about my current research as I had a baby just weeks after joining UHH and the year has been exhausting with both start-up- & new-parent-tasks. But, that's just all the more reason to celebrate! 1/

Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? My new (first 😱) paper explores why green parties remain uniquely challenged in economic crisis & that the mechanism is not only about sociotropic concerns, but also voters’ pocketbooks 🧵 doi.org/10.1017/S147...

Excited to share our new working paper with @benyoel.bsky.social: we analyse public opinion dynamics around the consequential election in Hungary last April and specifically look at (anti-)democratic attitudes in the aftermath of Orbán's defeat. Available here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Democratic Attitudes When Backsliding Reverses: Evidence from Hungary

Increasingly, opposition actors in settings undergoing democratic backsliding have been able to unseat anti-democratic incumbents. But unseating an anti-democra

How do elections in backsliding settings shape attitudes toward democracy? @gabrielagreilinger.com and I fielded two surveys: 1 pre/post & 1 after Hungary's election. In short, elections appear to increase satisfaction among winners, even months after. Working paper: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

The Swiss People’s Party SVP is one of the oldest and electorally strongest radical-right parties in the world. But: electoral popularity ≠ policy popularity Voters keep supporting the SVP in elections, but only 2 out of 12 popular initiatives launched by the SVP have passed Data: Swissvotes

A lot of European countries have seen the far-right winning in recent elections. Yet, the Swiss far-right SVP has just suffered its third consecutive direct democratic loss today: Its "neutrality-initiative" got massively rejected with only 29% yes votes.
