Making the opposition look bad is a political trick. It can be equally used by good guys and bad guys. The only weapon available only to good guys is truth. Lies can be exaggerated, but as Piet Hein pointed out, truth is constructed in such a way that it can’t be exaggerated.

Google today is suddenly remembering, for a moment anyway, the axiom: just because you can does not mean you should. That ought to be a persistent mantra in digital spaces.

Computation is just too cheap. It was way more interesting and fun when it was expensive. More to the point, it added a lot of value then and subtracts a lot of value now.

Actually you cannot do this at scale.

The large scale destructive reading of old books is probably going to destroy the last copy of a few items. It may be that there's some important insight buried in a small fraction of them and a small fraction of those might eventually have been rediscovered. This is an overrated issue, though.

Brandolini's bullshit asymmetry principle, though is part of the problem. The short circuiting of reason with emotional manipulation is also old news. But now, suddenly, it's obvious that computation is MUCH cheaper than human attention. What's left of the "marketplace of ideas"? Not much.

It really seemed for a while like Google was gonna not be evil, and even Facebook was gonna have some sort of a conscience. Now what are we gonna do? The pressures of capital apparently are overwhelming. I figure even BlueSky will eventually go the way of Twitter.

I realise the details are unlikely to be forthcoming, but I'd like to to know more about why OpenAI and Anthropic are unable to set up secure test environments without internet connectivity. It doesn't appear a particularly difficult task.

Man this is awful. This was a sincere question. I was happy with the discussion that came out of it. But I wake up this morning to nonstop abuse, because one of Bluesky’s cult-like figures has (pretty unfairly) attacked me as not understanding people need food. This isn’t good or sustainable!

Also spending more time with books again. Here's my three cents: - Read books on paper. - About two thirds of what I read is over 15 years old; consider books from other times. Used bookstores contain gems. - If you dropped a book some time ago, give it another look. You might like it better now.

This may sound foolish, but if it resonates with even one person it's worth it. I used to love reading. Then life and a lack of time got in the way. Recently it dawned on me that I don't have to finish books. A quick yes/no after 25-30 pages. Continue only the ones I'm loving. I'm reading again.

Shortages which do not impact production costs result in windfall profits. It's automatic, not obscene. Windfall profit taxes should be implemented, but yelling at inanimate corporations is beside the point. A corporation is a profit maximizing machine. If you want it constrained, constrain it!
