What I find baffling is the almost total blindness to the fact that children have their own reasons and motivations for doing or not doing things. It's not just about capacities.
On the other hand. If only people learnt more about the law of requisite variety: there are no simple solutions for complex problems. We don't have 5 basic things that will magically solve all our reading problems.
Here is something inspired by @musingsofadr.bsky.social's post from last week about great leadership. #UKEd #EduSky open.substack.com/pub/stevenke...
What Faramir Can Teach Us About Real Leadership?
In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien gives us two brothers—Boromir and Faramir, both charged with defending their kingdom against a rising darkness.

🚨New Post🚨 Cohesion has been a common feature of many effective teams I've worked in, however cohesion is dynamic, and not constant. As Grossman et al. (2022) discuss in their paper, cohesion can mean many things. Check out my post in cohesion below: researcherteacher.home.blog/2025/07/28/c...

📢 NEW BLOG POST 📢 Last week, I had the pleasure of listening to a colleague present at the CreativeEdTrust National Conference on the role of courage in leadership. Read my reflections, including on a paper by Peter Bregman below 👇🏽 researcherteacher.home.blog/2025/07/25/r...
Reflections on connection and courage in leadership
Reflections on Leadership through Peter Bregman’s Lens We often talk about what leaders do in schools; line management, accountability, vision setting. But much less often do we talk about what lea…

Absolutely chuffed that my blog from yesterday has sparked this piece by @musingsofadr.bsky.social. Dan does a much better job at bringing in ideas around this than I did and I especially like the idea that the role of leadership is to reduce uncertainty in an organisation. #UKEd #EduSky

Decoupling lower & upper secondary curricula
This is because a principal end-goal of KS4 is a grade. But in KS3, the principal goal should be an invitation into the reality constructed by a subject's members.

I suppose this is the take really, set what fits your context but there should be much more research into this to help make leaders make the right decisions

Is "I do, we do, you do" the right vision of a lesson?
When teachers step into the classroom, we never act alone. There is no “I do”. Each of our actions is a response, a small arc, in a continual loop consisting of ourselves, our tools, and our students.

This week in Becoming Literary, I'm wading into the knowledge v. skills debate to frame how I teach interpretation. Take a look at how I support my students' efforts to read the word & the world! #literacies #edusky #academicsky trevoraleo.substack.com/p/on-teachin...
On Teaching Interpretation (Part 2)
Cultivating practices to read the word and the world
trevoraleo.substack.com
This is the point for me. Here's a bunch of stuff that has been proven to work. Here's why it works. This is how it works. Now go try it and make it yours. It is one of the core principles I used when building the @literacyengine.bsky.social model for whole class modelled reading.
I think this is the difference for me too. Beliefs, shaped by prior experience, are the thing that connects to the Ladder of Inference and (my ever favourite) model of teacher dev. These differences are where the same PD input is personalised (even if we don't see it) so it's important to recognise.
Showing them practices ≠ mandating how they use them. That’s why it’s key to NOT frame those conventions as rules chiseled into tablets. They can/should be remixed, subverted, etc. but in ways that do so consciously. Less about good/bad & more about HOW/WHY they use/reject/remix those conventions.
New post is live! This week I’m diving into how I frame and teach interpretation to my Ss. Turns out I have a lot to say, so I had to split it into two posts. #literacies #academicsky #edusky #eruditepedagogy open.substack.com/pub/trevoral...

This is an important response to the Mossbourne story. No school is any one thing which is a problem for attack articles because in implying it's a universal awful experience for everyone they'll inevitably upset people. www.theguardian.com/theobserver/...
