I'm very happy about this. He told us he joined the conservatives to try to keep them to the traditional conservative stances and avoid the stupid culture war and racism stuff, the party pretty clearly responded that they saw the culture war and racism stuff as core. So hes leaving. Respect.

BC Conservative MLA Peter Milobar has announced he is leaving the party and sitting as an independent. Milobar, who ran for its leadership, was accused in the race by Kerry-Lynne Findlay of being in a “conflict of interest” because his wife is Indigenous and had worked for a First Nation.

How many days of discourse are we getting out of a sociologist who I'd never heard of before this week? And I'd think I would have heard of him, he works in sociology of education with some in philosophy of education, but I can't find any papers by him in my files, or even references to his work.

The lede of this story says Trump might be willing to walk away from Iran without a nuclear deal if it reopens Hormuz, which to me sounds like trading an Iranian nuclear weapon for recognizing Iranian sovereignty over the strait.

Sneering about the "faculty lounge" is deeply funny. Most departments don't have one, but if they do, it's like a wall of mailboxes, a coffee maker and maybe a mini-fridge. You're basically sneering about the break room on The Office. "Oooh, look who has a *vending* machine! Excuse me, m'lord!"

Is this another "equality looks like oppression to those with the most privilege" thing?

I am not a fan of the IHRA's definition of antisemitism and you can to some extent question some of this report's methodology. But there is no way to read the experiences of individual jewish students contained in this report and not be absolutely revolted and convinced of the need for action.

Ontario jails are using an AI tool that claims to predict prisoners’ behaviour. And it’s disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. An investigation by @desmondcole.bsky.social reveals the province knew the tool would discriminate against Black people—and used it anyway.

I know this isn't the point, but this seems to have come from a hack by the same people who hacked Canvas. Interesting to see what would have happened with everyone's data if they hadn't paid the ransom. Perhaps putting everyone's data together is a bad idea?
