11年の経歴を持つ、日英ゲーム翻訳者です。機密保持契約書でどのクライアントだったか特定できないんですけど、近年発売された、結構人気のゲームのローカライズ資料を納品してから、その開発社が独自のAI翻訳ツールを発表しました。使われた画像などからして私たちの英訳が使用された可能性が極めて高くて、ツールの存在を知ったら激怒しなかったと言ったら嘘になりますね。他のケースもあるかもしれませんけど、確認したのはそれだけです。 翻訳過程自体が一年以上かかった、数百万字程度の巨大な脚本だから、こんな結末になると思ったら誰も長い間努力する気はなかったでしょう。クリエイティブとして尊敬されていない感じです…

To a degree, I do think there's too much inertia to stop the bleeding in the short term for many reasons. Historically, what's protected localizers best is when our work is visible, recognized, and tangibly affects a game's success. When company cultures embrace our work, that's when we're safest. 🧵

Without naming names, this is absolutely happening with J>E locs, even and especially from devs/pubs that used to have a rock solid reputation. A lot of companies are bleeding talent, both in-house and freelance, as they either leave for what few green pastures remain or quit the field entirely.

I think gamers need to know it's gonna keep deteriorating in small ways, not a big bang Games will still drop for a while, but they'll be quietly worse
I think it's important for Touhou fans to try and absorb at least a good amount of knowledge of the official works and their stories because: 1. it's the most reliable common basis for how we can interpret and discuss the series with each other 2. ZUN writes some funny-ass shit

So the translator has obviously not known what that phrase means, and has guessed (quite reasonably!) that Sarah is chastising Jaha for still being sodding wet. It's such a cute and understandable pitfall to tumble into in the pre-internet age that it made me smile when I realised what had happened.
Basically she's telling you it's pretty cold of you to sneak off on your own without asking them for help. The trouble is that Jaha, another character who walks up and has the line directly before hers, has very literally just fallen into the water in the scene before.
One of my favourite cute mistranslations in the 16-bit era. Sarah says 水臭い, which literally means "(you / it / etc...) stink of water", but is a Japanese phrase you'd usually use when someone close to you is treating you like a stranger and not leaning on you / opening up to you when they need help.

I was speaking to a localizer once of a well-loved series - to the point where the publisher knows full-well that localization is a big part of why it is successful in the west - and they remarked "What if [localizer] gets in a car wreck? They're the VOICE of that character. We'd be screwed."
Trick Weekes@trickweekes.bsky.social · 3w agoOne of the things that, as lead writer, I had to bang into the head of senior leadership sometimes was that writers were not interchangeable even within a project. One writer knew a certain companion inside and out. When we lost that writer, a new writer coming in took twice as long to do the work.
