Not just science, but the #humanities as well - the National Endowment for the Humanities terminated the vast majority of their grants last year, and they are only now starting to be restored. #NEH
"Federal agencies relied heavily on keyword searches when terminating grants held by UC researchers, court documents revealed. While the searched terms varied across agencies, they focused on initiatives facing significant conservative opposition, such as DEI and green energy." 🧪 ⚛️ 👩🏻🔬 #AcademicSky

We're here for this, even though it took us a minute to figure out where @tressiemcphd.bsky.social 's 🧵 was going. Here for the #humanities. Always.
Fund the Humanities just because. Fund the Humanities for more vicarious intellectual intercourse on Main. Whichever.
Fantastic to see this student work! #NEH funding does great things.
We're using the restored NEH funding to build support for viewing multiple virtual objects at once, and to build connections to more archives. See this update on multiple object support from earlier this year: bsky.app/profile/book...

Making fewer grants was the "rationale" behind the firing of two-thirds of National Endowment for the Humanities staff; pls don't forget this. #NEH
Also, though, they’ve spent all the money on various conservative academic projects (UT got like $10M to hire faculty in our new civics school). I’m glad ACLS sued and won. But it’s going to be awhile before there’s a reasonable NEH.

What this article unfortunately leaves out is that fired National Endowment for the Humanities program staff had to *~interview~* for the very same jobs from which they were fired last year. And the agency gave far fewer "offers" for people to return than the 116 positions they slashed. #NEH
Last year, DOGE laid of the National Endowment for the Humanities' 2024 employee of the year. This year, NEH asked if she wanted to come back to the agency. As DOGE's mandate ends on July 4, the government is hiring again. www.notus.org/agencies/dog...

Thanks to all who recognize the tremendous pressure #NEH staff are under. Remember: none of this would have happened had the National Endowment for the Humanities not fired two-thirds of its staff after terminating 1400+ grants. And they could still make things right.
Hundreds of careers were affected by the grant cancellation, and restoration 2 years later can't reverse the effects of their loss. The NEH staff is now less than half its 2025 size, and the survivors have to process new grants and restore the canceled ones. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Thrilled to hear this for you and your teams! #NEHwins
Excited to announce that my teams and I are moving forward with resuming the two NEH grants for Nashville history which were unlawfully terminated last year. A big thanks to the @acls1919.bsky.social and @historians.org who picked up the lawsuit on our behalf. We've got work to do!
"I became aware that termination of research funding was another weapon in the arsenal to shut down independent thought and expression. And it became evident pretty quickly that this wasn’t one or two shots across the bow; it was a wholesale assault on basic research." - Claudia Polsky
"This isn’t final relief. The federal government is still hoping to re-terminate a subset of these grants. There’s a lot more work ahead," says Professor Claudia Polsky. Read a Q&A with @claudia-polsky.bsky.social via California Magazine: https://bit.ly/4xirm8v

Getting your National Endowment for the Humanities grant reinstated? Tell us about your amazing projects and we'll share your hard work here!
My NEH grant was reinstated. Thank you to everyone who pushed back against the Trump administration to make that happen. When we fight, we win! zines.barnard.edu/news/neh-cha... When college presidents cave, we lose!
For those looking at their NEH grant reinstatement, highly recommend looking at the Award Reinstatement Instructions, which are much more specific about what is/isn't a change of scope, what budget changes need approval (nothing w/in 25% of total award), & what staffing needs approval.
I'm actually finding these Award Reinstatement Instructions more useful than the Restarting doc. The Instructions are more specific about what they are actually asking for & what actually constitutes a change (& what doesn't!). Read carefully before starting. www.neh.gov/grants/manag...
So glad to hear that #NEH awards canceled last year will be reinstated soon! For those of you dealing with this, I'm sure the process requires new forms, work plans, or budgets, which can be frustrating. Pls remember that your NEH colleagues are overworked and overwhelmed, too.
Thank you to all who continue to speak up on behalf of National Endowment for the Humanities staff - we are so glad for you and hope we will see justice as well. #NEH
There are not enough thank yous to @acls1919.bsky.social @historians.org @modernlanguage.bsky.social and @authorsguild.org for mounting their successful lawsuit against NEH and DOGE. The process is now beginning to reinstate funds. I am thrilled. If only we could reinstate all of the employees.
We love to see it. Next up - hire back all the #NEH staff that were fired. And as a reminder, this NEVER should have happened in the first place.
