Holy hell, just had a Mourning Warbler in the yard (central PA). Heard something I didn't recognize... opened up Merlin... Merlin ID'ed it... I ran to get my binos... tracked down the sound and yep... MOWA! First in the U.S. for me... previously only seen them in the winter in Central America.

Cool, so NSF is now going to be used to essentially launder money to tech bros because universities are just too cumbersome and disciplinary oversight and regulations and accountability are all just too stifling for innovation. $1.5B for “X-Labs.”

NSF X-Labs

NSF's mission is to advance the progress of science, a mission accomplished by funding proposals for research and education made by scientists, engineers, and educators from across the country.

Just called my GOP Rep. and my Senator, Sen. Fetterman. I don't know if it will do any good. The tl/dr: DO SOMETHING. PLEASE, WE ARE ALL BEGGING YOU. ANYTHING. NO WAR CRIMES IN MY NAME, PLEASE.

OK, entomology friends! I just found this weevil on my wall. I’m in Central Pennsylvania. We’ve had a few warm days recently, but I also just returned from a family trip to Costa Rica, and I unpacked my bags a few hours ago. What do you think? Is this a stowaway? @alexwild.bsky.social

Picture shows a small, dark beetle with lighter golden flecks on its abdomen, climbing on a white wall.

🌊I have a new gig. 🌊 Introducing: OCEAN EMPIRE, my new column about U.S ocean policy and foreign affairs for @sciencepolitics.bsky.social. We are a brand new online magazine housed at Georgetown University. I'm thrilled to bring in-depth news analysis about what's happening to 70% of our planet.

Ocean Empire - Science Politics

Introducing a new column breaking down seismic shifts in ocean policy and explaining why they matter.

I've seen a lot of celebration about this and YES it is good news... but if I understand the situation correctly, there's still a LOT of internal f*ckery happening with these agencies' funding priorities... www.nbcnews.com/politics/pol...

Congress passes bill to fund U.S. science agencies, rebuffing Trump's requested cuts

The Senate voted to provide billions more to NASA, NOAA and the National Science Foundation than the president had asked for.

Really wish the asshole Europeans would understand that this isn’t the U.S. starting an imperial expansion. This is an eviscerated shell of a U.S. government being used as a weapon by *international* tech oligarchs to end traditional, democratic nations and replace them with a tech-run dystopia.

I appreciate this commentary on AI slop, but I think it's missing something. I saw THIS EXACT image slopped around, and I asked someone who shared it if she knew it was fake. She didn't, but recognized it IMMEDIATELY when it was pointed out. And didn't care. theconversation.com/what-is-ai-s...

What is AI slop? A technologist explains this new and largely unwelcome form of online content

AI slop refers to low- to mid-quality content created with AI tools, often with little regard for accuracy or quality.

Beautiful documentary covering research from all over the US on bee declines and conservation. Our work on the combined effects of pesticides and extreme weather on bumble bees is featured at ~45:45. Incredibly cool filmmaking by @neillosin.bsky.social and team! 🐝🥵📹🧪
