My somewhat monstrous article (it's long!) on Godzilla Minus One and Yamazaki Takashi has just been published at Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus. It analyzes the film through the structures evident in Yamazaki's many kamikaze narratives (particularly The Eternal Zero). #ゴジラ #山崎貴

I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

Can confirm that this soup does wonders for a stuffy nose and sore throat. If you can't find a whole chicken (not often available in J. grocery stores), just throw in a selection of bone-in drumettes and wings with the cabbage, carrots, ginger, and garlic. onehappybite.com/chicken-esse...

Recent horror movie watches: loved His House (2020), mainly for Wunmi Mosaku's devastating performance, but wow, that movie is a ROUGH watch, just heartbreaking and anxiety-inducing for its entire runtime, and something happens in the 3rd act that plunges the knife in even deeper.

Watched Kim Ki-young's The Housemaid for the first time last night and wow, that particular combination of lurid melodrama + gorgeous shot compositions + performances with just the right amount of weirdness really worked for me.

Image shows a black and white still image from the 1960 film The Housemaid of actress Lee Eun-shim leaning forward and pointing at something off screen.
