I agree and there are good points in the threads/branching subthreads. I also notice a difference among the responses between people socialized into a culture of inquiry as adversarial vs non-adversarial. (The former can take the form of being a dick or just being quiet.) Imo and experience the best

I think of it a little differently. As in, reforms simply do not happen in the absence of (fears of) an uprising. To be at all successful, reformists require radical movements. Radical movements do not need reformists (esp those unable to strategise, who always punch down and left).

one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon
I am more temperamentally open to two statism than most Palestinians in the West on principle but it does say something about both the viability of it and, to an extent, the intent behind it that most advocates of it believe in doing absolutely nothing to advance its realization.

IMO this does not say anything about the legitimacy of the idea itself but it does say something about its advocates and their own belief in it.
