Especially surprising given that it's got RLHKR at the usual S1/S2 spot, followed shortly thereafter by another R. The whole virus seems a bit of a strange beast though. Haven't looked at spike yet, but put it in a BetaCoV E alignment, & it's basically halfway between the sarbeco & merbecos.

Hey look another furin cleavage site (FCS) discovered in a coronavirus. BRZ batCoV was pulled out of bat in Brazil. "BRZ batCoV is sufficiently genetically distinct to represent a novel subgenus of betacoronaviruses"

Detection of putative furin cleavage sites in bat-derived
betacoronaviruses. Full-length S protein sequences were analyzed using ProP to
predict potential FCSs near the S1/S2 junction based on each amino acid position
(i.e., the amino acid region spanning residues 599–900). The presence or absence
of predicted FCSs is summarized by subgenus, highlighting distinctions between
bat-derived and non-bat-derived CoVs.

Talking of which, I just read @philippmarkolin.eurosky.social’s book β€œLab Leak Fever,” which I highly recommend It’s a gripping book, laying out the multiple strands of researchβ€”epidemiological, spatial, phylogeneticβ€”that, over time, piece by piece, like a jigsaw puzzle, point to zoonotic origins

Lab leak folks argue the FCS in SARS-CoV-2 is a "smoking gun" that "proves" the virus was made in a lab; they say the FCS isn't seen in nature But it *is* seen in nature & *has* been found in coronaviruses The FCS in BRZ batCoV only differs by a single amino acid compared to the one in SARS-CoV-2!
