the vast majority of voters don’t have durable beliefs about specific policies. we can wish for a more attuned populace, but this is just what representative democracy is. Affiliation to clusters of positions is also a pretty informationally efficient way of dealing with a two-party world.

A delightful read. AI "reasoning" is a form of "wishful mnemonics," since these things seem to still be doing a form of pattern matching (plus bag-of-heuristics) rather than anything we'd call reasoning. But does that matter? Yes... and no.
