I submitted a paper to a journal almost a month ago, and it is *still* with the journal administrator - hasn't even gone to an editor to decide whether to send it to peer review. Should I withdraw or message them? Even for philosophy journal standards, this seems like a very long time..

It’s always odd to me when I get asked if I am wearing a mask because I am sick. In my experience, these days most people wearing a mask are doing so to prevent themselves getting sick, and most people who are sick don’t wear a mask at all.

youve heard of failing upwards. well academic careers in 2026 encapsulate the reverse: succeeding downwards. so many talented, highly qualified people, being punished for their achievements

Clarence Thomas citing MIT philosopher Alex Byrne to support his ultra-transphobic opinion. I hope all the analytic philosophers who defended Byrne as a serious, apolitical scholar see this and learn something, but I'm not hopeful.

Clarence Thomas's concurring opinion in the trans sports ban case in West Virginia contains some of the ugliest transphobic stuff I have ever seen in a legal opinion. Straight-up gleeful. Vile man. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

2 WEST VIRGINIA v. B. P. J.
THOMAS, J., concurring
judgment). Because “gender dysphoria” is a mutable men-
tal state that is the object of psychiatric treatment, it does
not resemble the immutable characteristics on the basis of
which our precedents have applied heightened scrutiny—
race, sex, or national origin. Instead, gender dysphoria re-
sembles other characteristics on the basis of which legisla-
tures may classify with a merely rational basis. See, e.g.,
Heller v. Doe, 509 U. S. 312, 321 (1993) (mental illness);
Plyler v. Doe, 457 U. S. 202, 220 (1982) (immigration sta-
tus). Legislatures have many obvious rational bases to
keep men who believe that they are women out of teams
and private spaces reserved for women.
Second, as the Court recognizes, this case concerns “bio-
logical men” and “boys who identify as girls.” Ante, at 10,
27. Men and boys with gender dysphoria are not women or
girls, even if they believe that they are. Sex is an immuta-
ble “biological” characteristic, see ante, at 10; it is binary;
and “man” and “woman,” “boy” and “girl,” are the terms that
correspond to adults and children of each sex. See A. Byrne,
Are Women Adult Human Females? 177 Philosophical
Studies 3783, 3786–3787 (2020). To use language to ob-
scure reality—to show “indifference regarding the truth”—
is to lie to the public and cease to treat our fellow citizens
“as equal[s].” J. Pieper, Abuse of Language—Abuse of
Power 17, 21 (1992).

This headline is a bit unfair on Exeter colleagues, and a tad rage/ clickbaity. But remember: no-one who works in a non-Oxbridge university is safe or even secure in their employment. The way policy is set up a large % will *inevitably and inexorably* lose their jobs.

"The idea that people will be able to hold it together and deliver a term of teaching before they vanish off into the horizon, is bizarre, spiteful and naive as well.” The Times HE's punchy account of Exeter University's #BonfireOfTheHumanities & what one academic describes as "existential terror".

Older lady peeped the rainbow flag on my bike, asked in a thick Russian accent “It’s your Pride?” She told me her youngest grandchild is “not she berry or he berry but no berry.” I said “Nonbinary?” She got so excited. Yes! Yes! And “Is a secret, but they are my“ *looks around, whispers* “favorite.”

By happenstance, I googled a philosophy colleague’s distinctive terminology today to find her papers on it. The first dozen search results were ALL her papers, or citations of them. The AI Overview didn’t mention her once. It falsely attributed her (non-tech) concept to some tech bros at Stanford.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

I think any institution hiring people should be required to have an "annoyance score" that indicates how annoying it is going to be working for that institution based on how annoying current staff find it, and it should be publicly available information.

A bit ago I talked to ORFScience about my research on gender & names. This resulted in an article and a radio interview. I enjoyed my first experience doing this a lot more than I thought I would. So, if you read or understand German, you can listen/read here science.orf.at/stories/3235...

“Experimenting with unproven technology to determine whether or not a child should be granted protections they desperately need and are legally entitled to is cruel and unconscionable.” The rise of “artificial intelligence” tools in border policing is just so disturbing. We should reject such uses.

AI will be used to estimate age of asylum seekers from next year

The Home Office says the tool will make it easier to identify adult migrants "attempting to game the system".

Randomly remembered today that my maths teacher in middle school always sat noisy boys next to me so I would keep them quiet, and then gave me a bad participation mark when I didn't succed. Really hope today's kids have better teachers than that.
