Good interview with Miatta Fahnbulleh in The Times. This section resonated with me because officials are, in contrast to the popular view of the civil service, far too eager to implement ministerial ideas without thinking through the consequences. Also helps if officials know about their area.

She said she became well aware of the tendency of officials to take what their minister says literally and, after being appointed to the cabinet, was keen to make clear to her staff that she wanted to be challenged. “The first time I came into the department as a secretary of state, I said, speak truth to power. Challenge, have ideas. "There should be nothing that you feel you can't say. It is right for the service to say, 'well, yes, but this is the consequence of that'. Or 'have you thought about this? Or 'this is why we think it's a terrible idea'. You need to have that in order to effect change, in my view."

FWIW, here's the (over-long) response I wrote at the time: invisiblevisibleman.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-... I said I hoped he'd find the joy of getting out on a bike and that it might do him some good. I hope he found at least some happiness, albeit I'm sure he didn't take to a bicycle.

I visited Arundells, the home of Prime Minister Edward Heath, now a charming museum run by volunteers, who are some of the most knowledgeable & passionate volunteers I’ve met. On this occasion, I only went around the garden, full of rare trees-more photos anon - and took this photo of the Cathedral.

I admit to signing up and paying the £4.50 just to annoy myself before going to the pub. But I ended up agreeing with a lot of this. Certainly I agree that a big problem is employers and that devolution is the best way to fix this.

No-one has to go through there, so anyone with ambition leaves for somewhere they can mix with other people. You can pretty much mark off the sector hemmed in by the M62, A1, M25 and M20, and put up a 'Here Be Racism' sign.

The current UK government is disappointing on many levels, but it’s still the case that the day Labour won the election, a significant chunk of legacy media, GB News, the Conservatives, and Reform decided that it was time to have race riots. They’re cheering for race riots. They’re gagging for them.

Just remembered that Northamptonshire dibble employed a Chief Constable who was a mahoosive Walter Mitty, fabulist, fraudster and all round con artist, and it never really got much attention outside of the Chronicle & Echo & @northantstelegraph.bsky.social So there’s that.

I'm not saying it's not a story. I'm saying if papers couldn't tie it into a wider complaint about diversity hiring it wouldn't be this big a deal.
