i wish i could properly communicate how crazy some people made me feel for even talking about covering people’s rent it was just totally unheard of at this scale thankfully the 100s of people that formed rent funds and PTA and neighborhood committees all disagreed with the electeds and foundations
about half of that $38 million was mutual aid and crowdfunding. which is just…so much money. it really is incredible to think about.
we tracked months of rent payments to an estimated 13,000 families. the expected cost of rehousing those families, had they entered eviction, would be north of $218 million dollars. keeping them housed cost around $38-40 million
Yusra, the super genius who is working with fellow PhD students to turn this into real research, and I are very excited to talk to other places, foundations, and governments, about how funding rent in a time of crisis is one of the most impactful investments you can make
during OMS we formed a group of rent funds called Keep Minnesota Housed and tracked, between Feb and May, exactly how much rent was being paid and where, and what/where the unmet needs were the documentation allowed us to move money from foundations who had sworn they couldn’t pay rent
i am incredibly excited to share our research about how paying people’s rent through mutual aid made an impact on minnesota this year we accidentally collected more data than anyone ever has for an effort like this, and can very seriously say we prevented an eviction bubble that everyone expected
