I am a cis woman who chooses to have short hair and not wear skirts or dresses.
Because of this since a young age, I have been harassed, misgendered and accused of being in the "wrong place" because of how I look. When I am out in public, my partner and I brace for hostility simply because my fashion sense doesn't align with some people's ideals of womenhood.
It's just hair, it's just a shirt and still it causes a fuss. I hate to think how much worse it is for trans and non-binary people.
have always been like this but the response to how I turn up in the world changes based on how politicised people choose to make my identity.
I know when transphobia is on the rise because cis women like me get caught in the crossfire. I have experienced an uptick in hostility since a similar Bill was introduced in the United Kingdom. I shudder to think how much worse it will get for cis women like me, my trans and non binary friends should this legislation progress further.

The feminist movement was not established to see such regressive definitions of men and women encoded into law. Feminism was about breaking gendered spaces open, to allow all people equality of access, preventing discrimination on the basis of gender. Feminism was never about drawing tighter lines around the expression of our gender.
There is a clear and understood difference between biological sex and gender. Both of which are more diverse than the narrow definitions laid out in this Bill. By attempting to define gender based on these imported idealogical lines, you are making people less safe. You are encouraging harrasment of people who want no more or less than the right to simply exist in society like everyone else.
We have already seen the limitations with the similar definition based legislation in the United Kingdom. Rather than simplifying things as the proponents suggest, these definitions fall apart when they come into

contact the complexity of reality. What about intersex people? What about the potential harm of trans men forced back into women's spaces and trans women forced back into men's? What about the accusations towards people like me who look ambiguous enough in some people's eyes? How do we answer these questions when other laws around the world have already failed to? Particularly here as this legislations is at direct odds with current legal processes regarding gender identification on birth certificates. Will this legislation mean we introduce the need to carry documentation or will we subject people to harmful testing practices such as the inspection of genitals?
All of the above is much more invasion than the current reality of me as a cis woman, having a trans woman use the toilet cubicle alongside me. Or of joining a local sports team and playing alongside anyone who identifies as a women as part of the women's grade. Trans women are not a threat to me as a cis women but this

Trans women are not a threat to me as a cis women but this legislation is.
There are real issues facing both men and women in society today. Harm that is further perputated by strict adherance to narrow definitions of gender.
There is so much that could be done with Parliamentary time that would go ways towards addressing these issues and instead we see time wasted on this. It is a real shame for everyone involved that people are being asked once again to plead for their humanity to be considered. Least anyone else be made slightly uncomfortable at the existence of someone not exactly like them.

In the UK Samaritans volunteers reported a significant spike in suicidal callers from the trans community when the Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex was made last April, with call rates increasing by 40 percent. Excellent coverage from Marc showing how not only did Cabinet pick the worst option available, they also turned “increased access to gender services” into “a webpage listing gender services” because they want their evil to cost nothing, too.

The ministry of health advised the health ministers that puberty blockers should remain available for young people at high risk of poor health outcomes if they do not access blockers as part of gender affirming care. They also ignored this and banned it for all trans young people.

The health minister and cabinet ignored the recommendation and advice of the Ministry of Health and instead completely banned the option of pubertal suppression for trans kids making NZ one of the few places with zero access to this care.

Here are the headline paragraphs. The Ministry emphatically did not recommend this ban, and in fact repeatedly pointed out the significant level of harm it was likely to cause. The consultation found overwhelming support for continued access. The only people who thought different were cabinet.

Assessing Option Four against the criteria
147. Option Four, like the other regulatory options, offers less benefit under each criterion when compared to Option One. While it puts safety and caution first, based on a lack of evidence of safety or benefit, the approach is unlikely to be as effective as status quo because it removes the practitioner's ability to consider and respond in the best interests of the individual. This could be alleviated to some degree through patients attending the alternative services but may not resolve the medical issue that young people with gender incongruence/dysphoria are presenting for. Like Option 3b and 3c, people that desperately want to delay puberty while they consider their identity may try to purchase products online where there are safety issues with the quality.

PATHA has significant concerns about the UK’s PATHWAYS clinical trial protocol. These trials are unethical, dangerous, and won’t even give Simeon Brown the evidence he claims he’s looking for. Aotearoa shouldn’t endorse these trials, and it remains unethical to withhold necessary care.
