Befriender of wild things

Gateophilia. A passion for gates. For their seductive promises & the wildflowers growing near them. For their varying latches and shapes & designs & the satisfying clunk they make as they are closed. For the magic tunnels of light just beyond them which often seem to hint at passage a better world.

A gate at sunset in early autumn, on the edge of the village of Winkleigh, Devon, not far from where an infamous 1970s Devonshire murder-suicide took place.A gate on the South West Coast path - which red campion flanks here, lending colourful magic to the view ahead - that I have walked through many times, always appreciating its beauty, with the possibility of the time I walked back up the cliffs from the beach barefoot and got a massive sharp chunk of wood wedged deep inside my foot (I never got it out but it kind of rotted away inside my foot, in the end, as all biodegradable things - including us - will eventually).

The world no longer makes sense, fuckwits are in charge of everything and the internet is even further on with its mission to ruin people’s brains forever. As an ameliorating factor, though, there do seem to be more butterflies around than there have been for a while.

Astrud Gilberto was a housewife in 1964 when saxophonist Stan Getz decided he wanted his hit “Girl From Ipanema” to be sung in English — something her husband, Joao, who sang the original track, couldn’t do. Sold 2 million copies. Born today in 1940. 💕

A few of you - but probably not loads - will have read this before but, while I put a few finishing touches to a new piece ready for Sunday, I wanted to post it again, in slightly spruced up form, for...
